A policeman in Shaanxi Province, northwest China was detained for his alleged involvement in a 1.62-million-yuan ransom case in which the hostage was killed.
Police officials confirmed the officer, surnamed Wang, around 40, was among the five people involved in the crime that happened in Dali County, today's Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
The other four suspects have not been captured, they said.
The 29-year-old victim, surnamed Yuan, was the boss of a guarantee company in Dali. He called his relatives to prepare 2 million yuan in cash around 6pm on October 6.
About 10 minutes later, a kidnapper called to warn Yuan's relatives not to report to the police and send the ransom to a designated spot as soon as possible.
Yuan's family collected 1.62 million yuan in an hour, put the money in the place as instructed, and waited until the next morning, then they called the police.
The report said Yuan had already been murdered and cremated.
