Implanon contraceptive implant: Q&A

Questions have been raised over the effectiveness of the Implanon contraceptive implant, after it emerged that almost 600 women have become pregnant while on it. But how much of a risk of pregnancy is there?

How effective is Implanon?

The implant is over 99 per cent effective, which means less than one in 1,000 women using it over three years will become pregnant.

I've heard that Implanon can make pregnancy tests inaccurate, because it affects your hormone levels in a way that the test says that you are not pregnant, but in fact you are. Is this the case?"

No. Pregnancy tests pick up hormones that are only produced during pregnancy. Hormones from contraceptive methods won't affect the test.

How long does an Implanon device last once it is inserted?

It lasts up to three years but can be taken out at any time you want.

How can I tell it has been inserted correctly?

Ask to see the implant before it goes in (so you can see what you’re checking for). You can check its insertion as you should feel a single rod about the size of a hair grip just under the skin. Once its in its very unlikely not to be working properly.

How long after it has been inserted does it become effective?

If it's fitted in the first five days of your period you’re protected from pregnancy straight away. If it’s fitted any other time in your cycle you’ll need to use condoms for the first seven days. You can have it put in anytime as long as you are not pregnant.

How long after it has been removed am I covered for, before I need to use another form of contraception?

Your fertility returns immediately once the implant is removed so you’ll need to use another method straight away. If you want help in deciding go to My Contraception Tool at www.fpa.org.uk to help you choose.

I've heard that the implant can become less effective towards the end of its lifespan. Is this the case?

No it lasts for three years. You will get a smaller dose of hormones in year three than year one but its enough to stop ovulation (releasing an egg).

Should I be worried about pregnancy if I use the implant?

No, naturally women will be worried but this affects a small number of isolated cases. The vast majority of women using the implant shouldn’t be concerned, but if you are you can talk to the FPA helpline or the clinic or General Practice where you got your implant from.

I’m having an implant fitted tomorrow. Shall I cancel my appointment?

There’s absolutely no reason to cancel your appointment. If you want extra reassurance then ask what type of implant is being used (the better fitting device is called Nexplanon) ask to see the implant before its put in, then feel under your arm to make sure its there. If you’re really put off using the implant then there are 15 methods of contraception to choose from and the FPA helpline can help with information and advice.

What if I change my mind and want the implant taken out?

It’s entirely up to you. The implant can be removed at any time, but you’ll need to make an appointment. Do not try to remove the implant yourself.
