Contraband worth RM1.6mil seized
TUMPAT: The Pengkalan Kubor Marine Operations Force confiscated RM1.6mil worth of contraband goods, including Siamese rice, in 283 seizures so far this year. Its commanding officer Deputy Supt Tan Cheng San said the seizures were 20% lower than the corresponding period last year, when RM543,399 worth of goods were seized in 345 cases.
“A total of 36,486kg of Siamese rice valued at RM118,089 was confiscated this year compared to 14,607kg worth RM58,492 in the same period last year,” he said at a news conference here yesterday.
DSP Tan said 56 people were arrested under the Customs Act, Fisheries Act, Dangerous Drugs Act, National Padi and Rice Act, Supply Control Act, Immigration Act, National Parks Act and Protection of Wildlife Act during the period.
“Other goods confiscated included scarves, clothing, cooking oil, sugar, petrol, diesel, animals and vehicles worth RM1.4mil,” he said. DSP Tan said the force collected RM47,716 from compounds during the period compared to RM49,808 in the corresponding period last year. — Bernama
