Contraband cigarettes seized
Posted: 02 February 2012 2001 hrs
SINGAPORE: More than 4,300 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes have been seized by officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).
The cigarettes were found hidden in between bags of cement in a Malaysian-registered lorry at Tuas checkpoint.
The 31-year-old driver had produced an import permit to ICA officers.
The permit stated the vehicle was carrying a consignment of 18 pallets of cement.
But officers conducted a physical inspection of the consignment after the driver appeared nervous and evasive.
The potential duty is estimated to be S$342,122 while the Goods and Services Tax involved is S$32,074.
The driver, vehicle and illegal contraband have been handed over to Singapore Customs for investigation.
