A construction worker was arrested yesterday on suspicion of murdering his prostitute girlfriend after she was found dead at her flat in Yuen Long last week.
Zheng Shurong, 44, who moved to Hong Kong from mainland China about a year ago, was found dead with a curtain cord around her neck in the subdivided flat she rented in the Lee Kwan Building on Yuen Long On Lok Road on Friday night.
None of her valuables were missing except a mobile phone.
The construction worker, a 62-year-old man who had been in a relationship with Zheng for several months, was arrested yesterday at his home in Tin Shui Wai.
On Friday, Zheng’s 19-year-old daughter, a student at university in Chongqing, called police saying she had lost contact with her mother.
Police went to Zheng’s flat, where her body was found. She was certified dead at the scene.
Prior to the arrest of her boyfriend, police had been searching for a bald man who had stayed for about 10 minutes with Zheng at the flat at about 8.30am on Thursday, the day she was last seen.
Police believe Zheng had lived with a Hongkonger she wed in a sham marriage at the Leung King Estate in Tuen Mun until several months ago, when she moved out.
After a postmortem conducted yesterday, police said there were bruises on her face and neck but the cause of death could not be concluded after toxicological analysis.
Yuen Long district crime squad is investigating.
