STOMPer Darren Chong was shocked when he saw recruitment ads for DBS on its website. He says:
"Shocking!
"After laying off 450 employees recently, DBS is hiring again!
"I feel that DBS could have just reshuffled staff instead of retrenching.
"For example, for those employees retrenched, DBS can retrain them into relationship managers at POSB or whatever, easily.
"Since all of them are internal staff, they would be familar with their corporate ways of working or doing things.
"After the retrenchment becomes a reality, DBS has been criticised by Singapore’s labour union chief Lim Swee Say.
"He chastised the bank for not consulting its staff union on the sudden decision.
"It is generally perceived that DBS decided on retrenchment as the first resort instead of last resort.
"Our national papers also received an influx of letters from readers censuring DBS's apparent impulsiveness in handing out the pink slips.
"Such actions do not only affect the mood of the employees in a large financial institution.
"It drastically affects our national morale during bad times as well."
