Condo residents urged to be alert in crime prevention
SINGAPORE: Police have urged private property residents not to be complacent when it comes to preventing break-ins.
They found that some condominium residents leave their doors wide open at night.
The comments came as police cracked a serial housebreaking case at a condominium located along Cavenagh Road.
Between May and October this year, eight break-in cases have taken place at Cavenagh Gardens.
Since then, police have stepped up patrol efforts in the condominium but they stressed crime prevention is a collaborative effort.
Deputy Superintendent Cheryl Lee, the commanding officer of Orchard Neighbourhood Police Centre, said: "We noticed that there are security areas that could have been improved. We strongly urge private property owners and management to put in place more crime prevention measures and play their parts."
Channel NewsAsia understood patrols have been stepped up at the condominium since the break ins. Security officers now patrol once every two hours, instead of every four hours.
On October 10, police arrested a 24-year-old Chinese national in connection with the break-ins at Cavenagh Gardens.
Tian Shao Shuai was charged on Friday with house-breaking and stealing valuables amounting to more than S$5,100.
He is accused of breaking into a unit at Cavenagh Garden at about 12.30am on July 2 this year.
He allegedly forced open a wooden door with a screwdriver, and stole 14,000 yuan, US$1,000 and an iPhone.
If convicted, he could be jailed up to 14 years. - CNA/fa
