In response to upset subscribers, Singtel and Starhub are remixing audio for World Cup matches to prevent African vuvuzela horns drowning out other audio. Live match score displays will also be added.
In an earlier article, STOMPer ah_ jun82 gave five reasons why June 11's World Cup opening match between South Africa and Mexico was a poor experience. Chief among his complaints were the annoying African horns and the lack of a match score display.
In an joint reply Singtel and Starhub told STOMP:
"We refer to the online posting and comments on STOMP (12 June 2010) regarding the broadcast of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on SingTel and StarHub.
"SingTel and StarHub take the broadcast feed for all 2010 FIFA World Cup matches, including English Guide Commentary, directly from FIFA. This is the only feed available to all international broadcasters.
"We are aware of viewers' feedback regarding the loud ambient sound during the 2010 FIFA World Cup Opening Match between South Africa and Mexico. While the broadcast feed for the matches is provided by FIFA, we have since taken the initiative to advise our production agency to re-mix the audio. For the second match onwards, the volume of the commentary was increased, and the volume of the ambient sound was lowered.
"As the scoreboard and match timer were not available in our source feed, our production agency worked to incorporate these elements from the second match onwards.
"We will continue to monitor the situation and make any necessary adjustments.
"We apologise to viewers for any inconvenience caused and thank them for their understanding."
Addressing a suggestion put forward by STOMPer Jack that matches could be screened on a Pay-Per-View basis, Singtel and Starhub also had the following comments:
"SingTel and StarHub would like to clarify that we do not have the Pay-Per-View (PPV) rights to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
"The option to air the matches on a PPV basis was not made available to SingTel and StarHub.
"The broadcast rights which we have acquired for Singapore only include the rights to air all matches 'live' over television, mobile and online platforms."
