IN THE People's Action Party's (PAP) search for new candidates, commitment to serve is the factor that trumps all others, even ability, party chairman Lim Boon Heng said on Monday.

Candidates, he added, were reminded that winning elections was simply a means to an end.

The end was 'to have the opportunity to serve the people, to uplift their lives', he said.

Mr Lim made the comments as he unveiled the latest batch of three PAP candidates for the coming general election.

Marking a departure from the trend set by the first two batches introduced last week, the three from Monday were more distinguished for their dedication to grassroots work and ability to handle people, than their spectacular resumes.

They include two PAP branch activists: management consultant Tin Pei Ling, 27, who has been with the Ulu Pandan branch for the last seven years, and banker Gan Thiam Poh, 47, who was PAP branch secretary in Potong Pasir for over a decade.

The third is former schools superintendent Zainal Sapari, 45, who is also the first Malay the ruling party has unveiled as a new candidate in the coming general election.

To date, the PAP has introduced nine new faces out of an expected total of 'more than 20'.
