A collision between a liquid ammonia tanker and a heavy duty trailer truck in the quiet neighbourhood of Huarong County forced a mass
evacuation of residents while fire fighters and hazardous materials response team tackled the massive spill.
The head-on collision early this afternoon caused the ammonia tanker to roll over on its side and spilling liquid ammonia into the atmosphere.
The tanker was reported to be carrying about 25 tons of liquid ammonia at the time of accident. Both drivers escape with minor injuries and
were sent to nearby hospital for treatment.

Ammonia is a colorless gas and it has a characteristic of pungent and choking odor. One principle use of liquid ammonia is as refrigerant
for large commercial applications.
Ammonia s may be fatal if inhaled. At high concentrations, it makes the lungs fill with fluid, which can quickly cause death unless prompt medical
aid is given.
The vapors are extremely irritating and corrosive. Contact with ammonia gas or liquefied ammonia may cause burns to the skin, severe frostbite
or freezing of the skin and flesh.
A fire at an ammonia source will produce irritating corrosive and toxic gases.
Runoff from fire control efforts may cause ground and groundwater pollution.
