CNY food price list next week

PUTRAJAYA: Consumers celebrating Chinese New Year can be assured that the prices of most essential food items including pork will be capped.

Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Co-operatives Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said at least 15 items would have their ceiling price fixed.

Items on the list include pork, pork belly, garlic, cabbage, white pomfret, prawns and chicken.

“We do not want consumers who are celebrating the festivity to be burdened by exorbitant food prices.

“This will also prevent traders from fixing ridiculously high prices for certain food items,” he told The Star.

During Chinese New Year last year, 11 essential items were listed as controlled items.

Ismail Sabri said the price list would be announced next week.

11 items in price control list for CNY

LABIS: Eleven controlled items, including pork, have been listed under the Price Control Scheme in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations to ensure traders do not manipulate their prices.

Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the 11 controlled items were chicken (including live chicken, standard chicken and super chicken), chicken eggs (grade A, B and C), imported round cabbage, white pomfret, large white prawns, pig intestine, pork and lard.

The price for live chicken is RM6.10 per kg, standard chicken (RM7.20/kg), super chicken (RM8.05/kg), grade A chicken (36sen each), grade B chicken egg (35sen each), grade C chicken egg (34 sen each), round cabbage imported from Indonesia and China, except Beijing (RM3.20 per kg)/per kg).

The prices for other items are: white pomfret (RM38.00 per kg), large white prawn (RM33.00 per kg), pig’s intestine (RM22.00 per kg) and pork and lard (RM16.00 per kg). These prices are based on the prices in Kuala Lumpur.

“The price list for other areas and states will be distributed to traders and wholesalers soon. During the price control period, traders are not allowed to sell above the ceiling price,” he told reporters after a visit to the Labis Market here on Sunday.

He also reminded traders to display the items listed with pink price tags and added that action could be taken against those who failed to do so.

When asked about the Opposition highlighting the price increase of goods during campaigning for the Tenang by-election, he said there was no increase in prices of essential items like cooking oil, flour and rice.

“So, the promise by the Opposition that they will be able to reduce the price is baseless,” he added. - Bernama

We decided to do away with the licences due to complaints about red tape DATUK SERI ISMAIL SABRI YAAKOB

LABIS: Eleven items have been placed on the price control list for the coming Chinese New Year celebrations for 12 days, beginning Jan 30.

Among the items are live chicken, standard chicken (slaughtered with head, feet, liver, and gizzard), super chicken (slaughtered without head, feet, liver and gizzard).

Also included are graded eggs, imported round cabbages from Indonesia and China (not including from Beijing) bawal putih (white pomfret), udang putih besar (large prawns), pork (belly) and pork (lean and fat).

Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Co-operatives Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said these items were popular with the Chinese community.
He said this year, for the first time, traders need not apply for licences to sell these controlled items.

“We decided to do away with the licences due to complaints about red tape,” he told to pressmen after visiting Pasar Labis here yesterday.

“However, the ministry would like to remind traders to price the items according to the ceiling price set by the ministry.

“We also like to remind the traders to display a pink price card on ceiling items to make it easier for the consumers,” he said, adding that those who did not comply with the ministry would face action.

He urged consumers with enquiries or complaints on errant traders to call the ministry hotline at 1-800-886-800.
