Build a cricket stadium, open more venues

INTEREST in cricket has taken a giant leap here, sparked in part by the presence of more than 40,000 Indian migrant workers as well as thousands more expatriate Indian professionals and their families.
Cricket is the unofficial national sport in India.

Last Sunday's report ('Bowled over by cricket') states that 1,000 matches were played last year on 14 grounds locally.

The best field must be that of the Singapore Cricket Club at the Padang.
But as it is a members-only club, opportunities to use the pitch are severely limited.

Most practice sessions and friendly matches are played at Balestier Plain, bounded by the Singapore Indian Association and Ceylon Sports Club.

The two clubs now stand on temporary licences as the Land Transport Authority intends to develop that area, possibly for an expressway.
Where do lovers of cricket go then?

Even with the best teams around, we still cannot be of world-class standard when basic playing fields are lacking for friendly local and foreign games.

Until a cricket stadium or other playing fields are built and allocated for cricketers, the authorities should, for now, leave Balestier Plain alone.

Right now we don't even know if we will ever get a new sports hub.

Next, the Filipinos will want a basketball stadium and the PRCs will want a table tennis stadium.......

What happens to the stadiums if one day the Singapore economy hits the skids and the Indian, Filipino and PRC FTs all suddenly decide to pack their bags and go back west, east and north.

try so hard to please these foreign players. No use having a stadium with no spectators.
Think in the interest of the locals first, foreigners second, get priority right.
