Does racism mean we can't speak against any particular race ? Or that we must not identify any particular race with any particular trait ?

Actually, all these derogatory terms originated from Malaya era.

- Bayi means baby or cub in Malay. Bayi Singh started as a Malay insult on Sikhs as lion cubs as Malays understood that the name Singh means lion.

- Keling is a Malay corruption of Kalinga, south-east India where many Indians migrated from. It's further corrupted by Straits Chinese into Orh Keling (black Indian) and Keling Kia (Indian kid).

- Bangali is of course another corruption of the Bengal region in India.

- Kiao Thor is Chinese (particularly Hokkien immigrants who worked mostly in urban areas and harbours) calling Malay peasants muddiggers, probably in retaliation to being called golddiggers themselves.

- Coolie is English corruption of the Chinese term meaning hard labourer. It began as a derogatory term but somehow became neutralised and assimilated into mainstream English to mean simply employee.

- Ang Moh of course refers to the general hair colour of the British colonists ranging from brown to red to blonde. Ang Moh Kao means red-haired monkey and Ang Moh Gui means red-haired devil.

my girlfriend's 7 year old nephew recently complained to me that he didnt like this noisy boy who was always screaming and running up and down in his class. he referred to the boy as a black devil. is her nephew a racist?

No. Maybe black could mean the boy is very tanned, always playing under the sun. :)

But truth be told, devils always associated with black ma. Who has heard of a luminous shiny devil?

.

Bayi is a corruption of the term Bhaiya which means brother in Hindi. If you go to India, you will hear the term Bhaiya all the time. Dun anyhow smoke.

Well, legends have the habit of coming in different versions.

Personally I think race is just a term given to identify a certain group of people by geographical location because they are there or born there. They are people who spew degratory remarks on others just to conceal their own weaknesses. If you say A is stupid and you are smarter than A, it may be true at that instance and situation but does not necessarily true in all conditions. You need to compare apple with apple. If you are a Uni Grad, get couples of Uni Grad of all races and compare your performance with them. Dont compare with a people having Pri 6 education just because he cant do intergration or some differentiation problem? Look at a lot of people here who are I believe atleast Uni Grad. When not given a chance, they will still loose out to Pinoy Indian, PRC, Malaysian. Why? Finally we should see below and if that picture makes you feel good, so be it and continue dreaming in Lala land until you realize that 90% of Singaporean were Foreigner just few hourse ago.

There's such a thing known as good or bad racism.

Racism as per the word usually refers to the bad stereotypes of a race since no one will complain if they are stereotyped in a good way regarding their race unless they are a nutty purist.

There are of course different degrees of racism. Calling other races some names and just poking fun at them is in general harmless and the one getting poked at can call them names in retaliation.

Serious racism of course includes harming, maiming or killing someone cos he belongs to a particular race.

The worst form of racism is genocide of an entire race based on ideology or just to take over their living space like the holocaust, spaniards killing native americans etc.

In this country. Ppl take offence at the most junvenile form of racism which in some cases probably isn't even racism. Mind you and it's always only 1 way. This means that minorities like malays or indians can call chinese names and somehow it's okay. If the chinese do it, it's racist according to them. Just see for yourself. The malays, indians etc will laugh when telling jokes on chinese but immediately complain of racism and call police when racist jokes are made about them.
