Cigarettes hidden in salt
<!-- by line --> By Wendy Lim
A 24-YEAR-OLD Malaysian lorry driver tried to sneak in cigarettes from across the causeway by laying them under bags of salt. Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday uncovered the 17,500 packets of cigarettes worth $134,000 in customs duty and GST when the lorry was stopped for routine checks. ICA officers had noticed anomalies in the scan image of the lorry and found the cigarettes which were stashed in the modified floorboard of the lorry when they unloaded the bags of salt. The driver is being investigated by the Singapore Customs. The contraband cigarettes, truck and cargo have also been seized. If convicted for smuggling contraband goods, first-time offenders face a fine up to 20 times the amount of duty evaded and a jail term not exceeding three years.
