Cigarette smugglers nabbed
PONTIAN: The marine police have detained two Indonesian men in their attempt to smuggle more than RM200,000 worth of contraband cigarettes stashed in a boat compartment.
Marine police (Region 2) deputy chief Supt N. Kalai Chelvan said his officers found 1,250 cartons of cigarettes when they stopped a speeding boat at Rimba Terjun here at about 10.45pm on Friday.
“We managed to stop them after a 10-minute chase and found that the men had no proper documents and identification papers,” he said.
Supt Kalai Chelvan added that RM206,887 worth of contraband cigarretes and the vessel were seized. He said the case would be investigated under the Customs Act 1967.
He also said that last year, the unit seized a total of RM1.4mil in goods. Supt Kalai Chelvan urged those with information on smuggling activities to contact the marine police at 07-2372222 or 07-2376122.
