PAP: Chua Chu Kang fight is on who serves better

THE electoral fight in Chua Chu Kang GRC will be 'less a battle of credentials' but more a fight on 'who serves the residents' better, said Senior Counsel Alvin Yeo yesterday.
The former MP in Nanyang ward, which is in the newly created GRC, feels this is a good development as it allows voters to focus on what the politicians can do for them rather than on their qualifications.
His remark was directed at the National Solidarity Party (NSP), which is pitting its team with two 'A-grade' finds against the People's Action Party (PAP).
They are husband-and-wife duo Tony Tan Lay Thiam and Hazel Poa, both of whom had received prestigious government scholarships and now own their own business.
Mr Yeo was speaking to The Straits Times at Bukit Gombak MRT station. He was with fellow members of Chua Chu Kang GRC, led by Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong, who were greeting commuters and handing them calling cards.
As if addressing voters, Mr Yeo said: 'You have to ask, notwithstanding their scholarship credentials, what they are going to do for you.'
He added: 'We'll attack them on what they can do to make things better for voters. We haven't really heard how they would do things better.'
The NSP will unveil its manifesto today. A pamphlet it distributed to Bukit Gombak residents yesterday gave the manifesto's highlights, including giving Singaporeans priority in employment, selling HDB flats at 'cost-plus' for first-time buyers and reducing the goods and services tax from 7 per cent to 5 per cent.
Reiterating his team's electoral approach, Mr Gan said: 'My focus is on the people, not so much on... which team is coming, whether it's NSP or another party, whether 'A team' or 'B team'.'
After greeting commuters, the PAP team walked to Block 371 where they ran into the Singapore People's Party's Mr Sin Kek Tong. Mr Sin is contesting neighbouring single-seat Hong Kah North, where the PAP is fielding Minister of State Amy Khor.
Later, at Block 575, the PAP team came face to face with their rivals from the NSP, whose chief Sebastian Teo was leading his team on block visits. Mr Teo, 63, cheerfully greeted Mr Ang Mong Seng, 61, the retiring PAP MP of Bukit Gombak, who was two years his junior in the former Nanyang University.
