The Eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has gained seats in Hesse and now holds parliamentary seats in every single German state, according to exit polls. Meanwhile, Merkel's CDU has seen party support plummet.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) suffered an electoral shock, winning only 28 percent. The results were quite a disappointment for the CDU candidate and Ministers-President of Hesse, Volker Bouffier, a Merkel man who has stuck with her through thick and thin.
The CDU result marks a huge drop from the 38.3 percent won by the party during Hesse's last election in 2013.
"We are in pain because of the losses but we also learnt that it is worth it to fight," Volker Bouffier, the incumbent CDU state premier in Hesse and a Merkel ally, told supporters.

The AfD, meanwhile, gained 12 percent of the votes in Hesse, a state that is home to six million people and the German capital of finance, Frankfurt am Main.
The party's parliamentary leader, Alice Weidel, took to Twitter to celebrate its success.
"We are the People's Party!" she wrote, noting that the AfD is now "firmly anchored" in the German parliament and is "here to stay."

The nosedive in support for Merkel’s party in Hesse, known as Hessen in Germany, was predicted by polls ahead of the crucial election. Back in 2013, the CDU had to make a coalition with the Alliance 90/The Greens after the election resulted in no clear winner. It’s not clear if the CDU will now again unite with the Greens to form a government.
The Social Democratic Party (SPD), which went toe-to-toe with the CDU for decades, secured 20 percent.
"This is a bad result for us, I can't put it any differently," SPD Secretary General Lars Klingbeil told broadcaster ZDF.

The Greens placed third, just barely trailing behind the Social Democrats with 19.5 percent of the votes.
Germany’s political landscape has been visibly crumbling in recent weeks. Earlier in October, Merkel’s ruling coalition was shaken after the Christian Social Union (CSU) – the sister party of the CDU – gained 37.3 percent in Germany’s largest and second-most populous state of Bavaria. It represented the worst election result since 1950, and a loss of its absolute majority for only the second time since 1962. CSU General Secretary Markus Blume called it a “bitter day” for the party.
With the emergence of a fresh crisis, Merkel may face difficulties when she stands for re-election as the CDU chair at the party’s conference in December this year.

The key states of the Merkel party are again frustrated. The far right is basically determined to enter the parliament.

Hessen local election results (Source: German TV 2)

Overseas network October 29th, local time on the 28th, local election results in Hessen, Germany announced. Although the current Christian Democratic Union, where the current Chancellor Merkel is located, retains the status of the largest party, its dominant position is still suffering a huge impact. According to preliminary forecasts, the CDU has a vote rate of approximately 27.6%, a result that is about 10 percentage points lower than the 2013 local elections. This is also the worst record of the party in Hessen since 1966.

According to the "Frankfurt Report", this result caused the ruling coalition CDU and the Social Democratic Party, which had been frustrated in Bavaria, to be hit again. Merkel’s advantage in the CDU has shrunk dramatically, and the other Social Democratic Party of the Major League has barely held the position of the second largest party in the Hessian Parliament with less than 1% advantage. The situation is in jeopardy. The Green Party, which has been optimistic in Hessen, has become the biggest winner, winning nearly 20% of the votes in one fell swoop.

It is also worth noting that in the past few years, the far-right party “German Alternative Choice”, which has emerged from the refugee issue, has won 12.6% of the votes in this election and successfully entered the Hessian State Assembly. At this point, the party has obtained parliamentary seats in all 16 states of Germany and has become a "spoiler" in the German political ecology.

It is reported that the Hessen economy, where the European financial center Frankfurt is located, is relatively rich in economy and politically less. The CDU and its various ruling partners have been in power for nearly 20 years in the state. The forefront of the loss of the horse in Hessen is undoubtedly worse for the difficult situation of Merkel and his ruling coalition. (Overseas/刁世峰) Return to Sohu to see more

Angela Merkel won't seek re-election as party leader, sources say
UPDATED ABOUT 2 HOURS AGO

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she will not seek re-election as the head of her party, according to unnamed party sources.
Key points:
  • Ms Merkel's move follows a poor result in yesterday's Hesse state election
  • Her predecessor Gerhard Schroeder remained chancellor after stepping down as party leader
  • Her pick as a replacement is CDU secretary-general Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader told her party that despite stepping away from the leadership role, she wanted to remain chancellor.
German media, along with the DPA news agency, quoted unnamed party sources for the information.
Ms Merkel, 64, has been the CDU's chairwoman since 2000 and chancellor since 2005.
The news followed a poor result in the Hesse state election yesterday, where both Ms Merkel's CDU and its partners in national government, the Social Democrats, lost ground.
They also had a poor result in Bavarian elections earlier this month.
Ms Merkel had previously indicated that she planned to seek another two-year term as the CDU leader at a party congress in December.
Standing down from the party chair would allow a new CDU chairman or woman to build a profile before the next national election, due in 2021.
Ms Merkel's favoured successor is CDU party secretary-general Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
But sources suggest that Ms Kramp-Karrenbauer will not run unopposed.
Former parliamentary leader of the CDU-CSU alliance, Friedrich Merz, indicated that he wants to join the race, conservative politicians told Reuters.
Mr Merz was the parliamentary front for the alliance from 2000-2002 and was also a member of the European Parliament.
He now serves as chairman of BlackRock Germany, an arm of the world's largest asset and investment manager.

Ms Merkel's decision to step down echoes that of her predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, who quit as leader of his centre-left Social Democrats in 2004 as his government struggled, but remained chancellor.
For years, Ms Merkel insisted that the chancellor should also be party leader.
Her fourth-term government took office only in March but has become notorious for squabbling.
"The CDU faces a turning point," Mike Mohring, a regional party leader from eastern Germany, told Welt television.
"I have said over the past few days that Angela Merkel knows best what to do, and now she has decided. And that demands respect."
He said that it's important to avoid "long personnel debates" and restore people's confidence in the CDU as a governing party.
Ms Merkel's weakness at home may limit her capacity to lead in the European Union at a time when the bloc is dealing with Brexit, a budget crisis in Italy and the prospect of populist parties making gains at European parliament elections next May.
Ms Merkel dragged the CDU to the political centre in her years as leader, dropping military conscription, introducing benefits encouraging fathers to look after their young children and abruptly accelerating the shutdown of Germany's nuclear power plants following Japan's Fukushima disaster in 2011.
A major bone of contention within her 'Grand Coalition' has been her stance on refugees, with her decision to allow in large numbers of asylum-seekers in 2015, leading to lasting tensions.
Ms Merkel is scheduled to hold a news conference.

Merkel's party is merely not winning as many seats as they used to. They are not outright losing elections. The CDU has won enough seats that Merkel will comfortably remain as Germany's Chancellor for her 4th term. No party revolt nor revolving door system for Merkel. So what seems to be the problem?
