Not sure how they came to write that article about Chip Goodyear but it give an erroneous picture of the man.
Chip took over from Brian Glibertson after the latter moved man and mountain to create a monster of a Mining Company called BHP Billiton. Brian, the wheelr dealer that he was fell out with chairman Don Argus and quit. Chip took over.
BHP was not bleeding. Any donkey with a half a brain would know that it was during this time that mining began to surge and good for Chip that he was there to ride it for the next 5 years in such unprecedented times fueled by the Chinese locomotive.
Chip did not create the Chinese locomotive but made sure that he was on it and it was not hard to do as its required lots of mineral resources and dear Brain Gilbertson had virtually cornered the market.
Chip is recognised as a team player, a good organiser, a clear thinker, a consolidator and a people person.
He retired 5 years after and the Chinese locomotive was still going uphill with record pricing for minerals being set. Ever heard of a winning CEO leaving at the age of 50
To write an article of such an extent to protray that he fixed a bleeding company is false when the biggest factor was luck and his ability to maximise it. I am sure Chip will agree as well.
Looks like Chip might have a 2nd chance at luck again unless this recession gets even worse and the bottom falls out. Other than that it has only one direction to go.
