Police in China’s Guangdong province have arrested seven suspected members of a gang of knife-wielding motorcyclists who have terrorised pedestrians late at night for nearly a year, the Guangzhou Daily reports.

Police in Jieyang, in the east of the province, said the suspects were unemployed but fashionably dressed young men. They often rode at night in gangs ranging in size from a handful to dozens, using long knives to slash innocent pedestrians for the thrill of it.

Police have received reports since June of the random, unprovoked attacks, that occurred mostly between 11pm and 4am on remote stretches of highways near parks or along village roads.

“Sometimes they worked in groups of more than 30 riders, attacking anyone who came along. If a victim managed to drive away, they would chase the car and surround it, beating up the driver and vandalising the car with tools,” police said.

In extreme cases, victims have been left permanently disabled, the police officer said.
