38-Year-Old Man Rents “Post-90s Girlfriend” Home for Spring Festival Holiday, Gets Her Pregnant
38-year-old Gao X from Xuzhou can be considered a “leftover man” [a man who is getting old but remains single] in his family, continuously working in Zhejiang province. As a result, his parents have been urging him to get married. Seeing that he couldn’t avoid it, Gao X proceeded to lie to his parents saying he found a girlfriend at work, and would bring her back for the Spring Festival holiday for his parents to see.
Last year before Spring Festival, in order to satisfy his parents, Gao had no choice but to post a “will pay generously to rent a girlfriend to go home for Chinese New Year” online. After seeing the post, “post-90s” Xie X, a university student in Xuzhou, applied for the job.
While at Gao X’s home over the Chinese New Year holiday period, the two of them slept in one bedroom. Unable to control their attraction to each other, they soon had sex. A few days later, Xie got her payment, and Gao also left returning to his job, the two of them going their separate ways. A few months later, Xie however discovered that she was pregnant, and without a choice, she had an abortion. Despite contacting him multiple times, Gao X expressed refusal to bear the costs of the abortion. This year before Spring Festival, upon learning that Gao X had returned home, Xie X found Gao X, but his attitude remained unchanged.
With no choice, Xie X went to the Xuzhou Gulou District Judicial Bureau Legal Aid Center for help.
2013 February 16, after the staff of the center understood the situation, they immediately accepted the case, and informed Gao X that her pregnancy and abortion were caused by both of their actions, and to let Xie X face the consequences alone would clearly be very unfair, which meant Gao was also responsible. In the end, the two reached an agreement on the spot: Gao X would bear half the responsibility by paying 3,000 yuan in compensation.
