The Sun is the center of our universe as the Earth and seven other planets orbit around it. The Sun brings light and warmth to our world. But should we ask another question: Can we create an artificial sun?

Chinese scientists have already accomplished the task by initiating the experimental project in 2006 at the Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The Hefei-based group has embarked on achieving major breakthroughs on artificial sun research and developing new technologies to accomplish record-breaking innovations.

The artificial sun is known as the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), a Soviet-designed device that can make core temperatures even hotter than the sun.

2017070715394872916.jpg

Record-breaking evening

On the evening of July 3, Chinese scientists had set a world record by reaching 101.2 seconds of steady-state H-mode operations via a Tokamak device to harness energy - fusion.

In other words, they turned on an artificial sun, which continued to burn at scorching hot temperatures for nearly two minutes. The prior record - about 60 seconds - was set by the same team a year earlier.

They could set up a long-pulse with an H-mode discharge that can convert into energy, such as what occurs at a nuclear power plant.

Chinese scientists have received support from experts all over the world as they collaborate on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), a large-scale scientific cooperation project.

Scientists from over 30 nations are participating in order to prove a fusion device can create energy, based on principles that power the sun and stars.

Make nuclear energy great again

Nuclear energy deserves recognition as green energy, since it's carbon-free and can provide a large supply of power to households.

Creating an artificial sun can upgrade nuclear power capacity. The EAST team had tapped contained super hot plasma for record lengths of time.

By replicating the energy-generating process of the sun, Chinese scientists have gotten "closer to clean and virtually unlimited energy offered by nuclear fusion," according to ECNS (English-language China News Service).

During the record-setting experiment, the EAST team could heat up H-mode plasma to 50 million Kelvins (49.999 million degrees Celsius).

The ultimate goal for ITER members is to produce 500MW (megawatts) of fusion power with only 50-MW - input power.

Chinese government officials have shown vital support for EAST, including from Yang Hongwei, director of the energy efficiency center under the National Development and Reform Commission.

Shifting out of fossil fuels

Yang believes developments on the artificial sun would represent the future direction of green energy innovations.

"This breakthrough is an important step amid the transition from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy," ECNS quotes Yang as saying.

Nevertheless, not everyone supports creating an artificial sun for commercial purposes. Lin Boqiang, dean of the China Institute for Studies in Energy Policy at Xiamen University expressed concerns that fusion energy is too expensive for production.

Scientists are at the initial stages of developing fusion energy. They have not set up the commercialization and application of the technology for daily life.

The potential costs could be exorbitant and that must be taken into consideration for wider application in households, said Lin.

There's a long way to go before the artificial sun can serve as a reliable and affordable source of fusion energy.

Witness to developments

Serving as the chief operator of EAST, Gong Xianzhu has witnessed every advance made in the Tokamak device along with its setbacks.

"EAST will continue to play a key role on both the physics and engineering fronts of steady-state operations and has significant scientific implications for ITER and the future of of China Fusion Engineering Test Ractor (CFETR)," said Gong.

Chinese scientists have worked with their peers from abroad to solve key technical and physical issues on operations, while conducting in-depth scientific research on integrated operations scenarios.

The EAST team will wrap up experiments on the artificial sun in Hefei later this month and will conduct another round later in autumn this year.

They set a goal for the Tokamak device to hit the 100 million degrees Celsius mark for 1,000 consecutive seconds.

Top-ranking as fusion maker

Constructing an artificial sun to make it run three times hotter than the sun’s core may not seem practical. The costs are enormous, as well as the time and efforts required for scientists to work on the project.

Yet, new discoveries could await as the EAST team has not only succeeded in breaking records but stand poised to achieve groundbreaking scientific innovations that could lead to an energy transformation.

Reducing pollution and cutting carbon emissions would allow all Chinese to breathe easier, which can reverberate to positive outcomes all over the world.

Perhaps an artificial sun could indeed produce a new source of energy that will offer strong commercial appeal, but if that occurs they should find ways to make the new energy source more affordable for families.

THE US is on the verge of perfecting fusion which will produce unlimited green energy
On Friday, scientists at MIT and Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a private company, announced that they will be working together and the US could have completely green energy within two decades.

The collaborators believe they are on the verge of breaking the code of nuclear fusion.

Fusion is the energy source of the universe, which powers our sun and the distant stars.

Bob Mumgaard, CEO of the private company Commonwealth Fusion Systems, said: “The aspiration is to have a working power plant in time to combat climate change.

"We think we have the science, speed and scale to put carbon-free fusion power on the grid in 15 years.”

But the collaborators working on the project think they have found a new way to make it work.

Their system uses a new high-temperature superconductor which they predict will allow them to create the world’s first fusion reactor which produces more energy than needs to be put in to get the fusion reaction going.

The company has attracted $50 million in support of this project from the Italian energy company Eni.

Maria Zuber, MIT’s vice-president for research, said: “At the heart of today’s news is a big idea — a credible, viable plan to achieve net positive energy for fusion.

“If we succeed, the world’s energy systems will be transformed. We’re extremely excited about this.”

Fusion represents a zero-carbon, combustion-free source of energy.

Until this day, every fusion experiment has operated on an energy deficit, making it useless as a form of electricity.

Nuclear fusion, however, has almost no downsides.

It does not put carbon into the atmosphere like the burning of fossil fuels or generate radioactive waste like nuclear fission, which is the technology in current nuclear power plants.

One problem, however, with fusion has always been heat.

Scientists at MIT and Commonwealth Fusion Systems announced that they will be working together
Fusion produces temperatures hotter than the centre of the sun so solid materials melt, ruining any potential for a power plant.

Professor Howard Wilson, a plasma physicist at York University who works on different fusion projects, said: “The exciting part of this is the high-field magnets.”

Professor Wilson, however, was not sure how MIT and Commonwealth Fusion Systems will be able to hit their 15-year timeframe.

The collaborators breakthrough happened because they were able to use a new type of superconductor to produce small, powerful magnets which is a key component of fusion reactors.

The magnets create a field to hold the fusion reaction in place without it touching anything solid, therefore subsequently solving the meltdown problem.

In the past, however, it took a huge amount of energy to power the magnets.

The new magnets created by the collaborators are much smaller and need less energy.

This means that, for the first time, their system produces more energy than it consumes.

What BULL is this! Do they understand simple English words "verge" or "unlimited" or "We think"!
With my unlimited personal qualities, I think I am on the verge of becoming The President of Singapore!
Wherever you find man, you'll find corruption. There are small time and big time. In the case of these nonsensical billion dollar experimental programs, there are institutionalized corruptions where the physicists are all lying. These physicists are just pushing their agenda and trying to create more sensational news so that they could get more funds for their projects. Its all money and nothing much about science.

We know the phenomenon of fission and fusion not long after Madam Curie first discovered radioactivity. We have been talking fusion many long decades ago; talking after talking. But our nuclear reactor physics is no different from the time of the first Hiroshima bomb - there never was any real fundamental breakthrough in physics since then. We have the same electromagnetism theory and our atomic and nuclear theory are no different from what we knew then! The rest are nonsensical relativistic physics.

They say they know very much about what is within the atoms, the things that electrons, protons, neutrons are made of - quarks whatever. They called it the Standard Model. But this is a castle in the air - all founded on Einstein's fictional formula : E = mc2; this formula is wrong. The "E" in E=mc2 is fictitious. How can you "have fusion energy in 15 years" when your physics is all wrong. The physics world is all controlled by the relativity faction and it will ensure we will never have any real fundamental breakthrough in physics - not in the next 100 years! Unless they throw away Einstein's relativity theory and start to investigate real physics that matters in our physical world.

The CERN physicists say they have discovered the Higgs boson - and was awarded a Nobel prize for it. They say they have detected gravitational waves - as predicted by Einstein's General Relativity theory - when certain black holes at the edge of the universe collided.:( Being a Muslim, I am rather conservative and would say what Muslims scholars would oft repeat:
Allah and his messenger knows best.

And folks, this is how the world will end! The chinks, being incapable and corrupt, will have a catastrophic nuclear fallout which will basically fuck the whole world.

Fusion nuke furnace is fallout free.

They are not like the fission furnace. Fusion nuke use Hydrogen or similar light atomic weight short half life material as nuclear fuel not the Uranium type.

Hydrogen has three isotopes H D & T.

Tritium is radioactive with a half-life of about 12 years.

Uranium 238 half-life is about 4.5 billion years!

upload_2018-4-23_23-32-30.png
hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu

The rate at which a radioactive isotope decays is measured in half-life. The term half-life is defined as the time it takes for one-half of the atoms of a radioactive material to disintegrate. Half-lives for various radioisotopes can range from a few microseconds to billions of years.

So typically if Fusion Nuke Power plant leaks or spilled. Their radio activity is millions of time rapidly reduced vs Fusion nuke power plant leak.

If say the Fukushima site is unsafe for 50 years from day of accident, a Fusion nuke power site becomes safe within an hour or less. The radioactivity strength decays millions of times faster, because it is light molecular weight fuel.

That is why Chinese technology is good and safe. Ang Moh's are bad dinosaur age filthy craps. Chinese Fusion Nuke station technologies are also very safe, they got air-cooled melt-down-free reactors, that shut itself down naturally without intervention. Ang Moh eat shit also can not learn.

In terms of Nuke weapons Chinese are also doing their 4th Gen 5th Gen warheads development, no disclosure but surely more advanced than Ang Moh's.

4th gen nuke warhead is supposed to be PURE FUSION aka CLEAN NUKE WEAPON. Similarly using Hydrogen Isotope nuke fuel only, and without the usual Uranium / Plutonium as primary stage fuel. You can see it if they can make pure fusion clean civilian nuke furnace, they sure can make military pure fusion warheads.

It means you can nuke a fucking city and soon after the Mushroom Cloud dispersed, it is clean and not radioactive any more. You can go and occupy the city / land / Island (Think Taiwan).

In the 90s, Ang Moh acknowledged that PLA was the leading maker of Neutron Bombs which is 3rd Gen nuke. What it does is most of the nuke energies from the E=MC² blast with this design emitted as strong radiation flash, with less heat and shock-waves - Neutron / Plasma / X-ray / Gamma ray to penetrate buildings / ships / bunkers / tanks etc and kill the people inside, while leaving the infrastructure quite intact. The exaggerated or idealized effects of DEATH RAY WEAPON although won't be that perfect - in actual effects, the buildings nearest to the center of blast are still vaporized to gas and blown to dust, but compared with a normal nuke must much less mechanical destruction, just more people killed by RADIATION. The use is similar, you can find the aircraft carrier hull still in a single piece, tanks still remaining in shape, most buildings not fallen. You can occupy the city after radioactivity decayed, you can pickup tank hulls to display a war museums, you can haul the aircraft carrier back to show as war trophy.

PLA announced superior technological achievements in radar anti-jamming capabilities. Meaning Ang Moh electronics warfare jamming measures can no longer dream to work. Chinese radar will still catch Ang Moh's missiles, planes, ships, drones, etc even if they try to jam PLA's radar, they can not expect the desirable effects any more.

China's radar super anti-jamming stunt exposure US electronic fighter no longer want to suppress
0

Today (April 22) is the day of the 68th anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese Radar Corps. Since its development, this branch has become the backbone force of China's air defense and anti-missile.

In modern warfare, radar equipment that can sense the battlefield becomes more and more important. Without it, it can almost be said that you will not have to fight. In the course of the development of our air-defense radar units, we encountered some setbacks. For example, during the Taiwan Strait crisis, radars in China’s coastal areas were seriously disturbed by US electronic warfare aircraft.

With the rapid development of electronic technology in China in recent years, similarly disturbed images will no longer appear. Recently, the SLC-7 multi-function phased-array radar from China Electronics 14 unveiled at the Asian Defence Exhibition. Manufacturers introduced the self-assured word “super” when it was used to describe the anti-jamming performance of the radar. Today, we talk about this radar.
△ SLC-7 Radar exhibited at Asian Defense Exhibition this week △ SLC-7 radar exhibited at Asian Defense Exhibition this week

The SLC-7 multi-function phased array radar works in the L-band and uses a digital phased array system with two-dimensional phase scanning and azimuth mechanical scanning capabilities. This band still has the potential to detect stealth targets, and it is easier to achieve high detection accuracy, so multi-purpose performance is outstanding.

In the design process, the radar begins with anti-stealth aerodynamic targets, anti-adjacent space, and ballistic missile targets. It adopts a number of mature technologies, which have long-distance range, high measurement accuracy, and strong anti-interference ability. Using radar front bicycle transport, erection, reception time is short, mobile.

SLC-7 has the function of long-range air defense and anti-missile early warning, target indication, and tracking and guidance. Its combat targets include stealth aircraft, conventional fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles, tactical missiles, and near-space targets. In addition, radar can even locate artillery and rocket targets, and its use is far more extensive than many other similar radars.
△ China Electronics 14's SLC-7 (right) and YLC-8B debuted in 2016 Zhuhai Airshow △ China Electronics' 14 SLC-7 (right) and YLC-8B debuted at 2016 Zhuhai Airshow

In 2016, the SLC-7 was physically presented at the Zhuhai Airshow. However, the radars that were exhibited with it included the YLC-8B radar, which had been used to track F-22 fighter jets in the northeast. Therefore, it caused much less reaction than the latter. However, in terms of overall performance, SLC-7 is not inferior to YLC-8B in overall performance. Of course, the two radar bands are different, and the focus of implementation tasks will naturally be different. The SLC-7 with band characteristics, to achieve a multi-purpose performance better.

During the Zhuhai Air Show, perhaps because of publicity needs, the focus of SLC-7's publicity at the time of its appearance seems to be "anti-stealth." According to Jane's defense report, the SLC-7 has a detection range of 450 km for a target with a radar reflection area of 0.05 square meters. From this data, SLC-7's anti-stealth ability is indeed excellent.

△F-22 and other stealth weapons pose a great threat to China's national air defense. China’s R&D early warning detection radar will consider anti-stealth requirements.

However, in terms of anti-stealth, compared to the UHF band radars such as the YLC-8B and the congenital advantages of the VHF band, it should be said that the main selling point of the SLC-7 is anti-stealth or a bit "reluctant."

It should be said that multi-purpose is the "handcuffs" of SLC-7, and anti-missile performance may be the focus. At the Zhuhai Air Show, China Electronics Corporation listed Israel’s “Green Pine” as the benchmark product of the SLC-7 radar in its exhibition materials, saying that its overall performance was better than the latest model of the “Green Pine” series.

“Green Pine” is the benchmark product of the global anti-missile radar. Countries such as India and South Korea that are extremely sensitive to ballistic missile defense have chosen to purchase this model for missile tracking and guidance. Interestingly, both countries claim to be able to manufacture anti-missile interception missiles and they have advanced electronic technology, but they can't get anti-radar radar. This also reflects the complexity of the R&D of such products.
△ Israel's "Green Pine" anti-missile radar △ Israel's "Green Pine" anti-missile radar

It is no coincidence that China Electronics Select “Green Pine” as the SLC-7 benchmark product. According to Jane’s defense report, SLC-7 has a target detection range of 300 km for a ballistic missile with a radar reflection area of 0.01 square meters. This should be It is a figure with stable tracking and detection probability of 90%, and the actual detection distance will be farther. In terms of data, it's remarkable.

Of course, the performance of SLC-7 is only reflected in the hard indicators. Because of the importance of radar, the first thing to do on the modern battlefield is to interfere with the other’s radar. For example, when the United States recently cracked down on Syria, the B-1B bomber would have an electronic warfare aircraft. This was for self-defense, and on the other hand it interfered with the other radar. Detecting a cruise missile is inherently difficult. If the radar's anti-jamming performance is not good, then there will be no parrying power for the American offensive.

△ The US’s previous generation of electronic warfare aircraft EA-6B had suppressed China’s radar. Even if the United States uses the newer EA-18G, it is difficult to reproduce the current situation.

According to China Electronics 14 introduction, SLC-7 has excellent anti-interference ability. While using the all-solid-state active phased array system, it uses the “super” intelligent anti-jamming technology, which has the functions of interference detection, analysis, classification, and interference self-adaptive suppression. While working, the radar investigates interference signals for analysis, automatically extracts interference characteristics, and completes interference classification and identification processing by comparison with the interference signature database. According to the results of interference classification and recognition, the anti-jamming measures of adaptively selecting responses complete the suppression of interference sources.

It can be said, SLC-7 is definitely a low-key, luxurious top-radar products. However, its intelligent anti-interference ability will obviously not be the case. China's current fleet of new-generation radar systems should have similar capabilities. In this way, China’s radar detection network will be more confident in responding to strong enemies, and being easily disturbed will also become history forever.
△ China has built a powerful and systematic early-warning detection network. The SLC-7 will have its own clear positioning if it is in service. △ China has built a powerful and systematic early-warning detection network. The SLC-7 will have its own clear positioning if it is in service.

In terms of SLC-7 radar alone, if it is exported, it can serve as a backbone force for air defense anti-missile early warning in the middle countries. In the case of the People's Liberation Army, which has a complete early warning system, its use will be more flexible and it can bring out its potential to the greatest extent possible. AFAIK, there is no clean nuclear bombs; so I think there is not any "pure fusion" bomb yet. In the current tokamak fusion, the energy input is more, or nearly as much as, the energy output. So there is no way to have a pure fusion bomb.

In the first place, nobody really knows how the nuclear bombs are designed. The term "hydrogen" bomb may be present in popular media reports, but no one will tell how to make the bombs - just common sense. So no one really know how much fusion there is in a so called "hydrogen" bomb.

fake news. it’s real news when prc cannot contain it and shit hits the fan. the downside being that billions of tiongs will evacuate and pollute other cuntries with free for all defecation.

Ang Moh surely don't have it because their civilian pure fusion power plant still 15 years behind Chinese.

Chinese can have it better and faster than anyone else. It is proven that they are leading the rest in so many areas of nuke science.

I think there is no nuclear fallout type danger at all with their tokamak fusion experiments. There is no fissionable material used at all. I think all energy input is electrical which somehow heat up some plasma - it is just an advanced sort of electrical heating method.

it’s not the fallout as there’s none. it’s the extreme temperature containment. it will melt through most if not all containment materials. cooling as a preventive measure is subject to faults and errors, and in the case of prc’s island neighbor, natural disasters.

Aiya! Melt is OK lah. As long as no radioactivity lasting.

Many thing melts these days, like Gay Phones!

A fusion nuke power plant if overheated, it is no bigger deal than a steel mill accident. Just firemen go spray water that's it.

I hope the yanks did what the ah tiongs did to them..steal their tech n cyber attack them

It is already possible to make billions of nuke warheads unlimited quantity and unlimited power (mega ton capacity) with clean pure fusion. And the are pure hydrogen bombs. Do not require Uranium fuel, which are too rare and too heavy. Hydrogen is as light as McDonald's Balloons! You get hydrogen from electrolysis of water cheap and nearly unlimited.

They can have as many such warheads as they have lithium batteries. Hydrogen is easier to obtain than Lithium.

How would a pure fusion bomb change modern warfare
warfare weapons weapon-mass-destructionmodern-age nuclear-power

Currently most Nukes are actually thermonuclear fusion bombs ignited by a fission (uranium or plutoniom) bomb.

The fission bomb is like a lighting match that s needed to trigger the more powerful fusion reaction. The fission bomb produces lots of radioactive waste. That s why we say that nukes are "dirty".

If we manage to create a pure fusion bomb that doesn't need a fission bomb to ignite, then we would have a "clean" hydrogen bomb. The first country to gain access to such a bomb would have a tremendous tactical advantage.

Your enemy is moving his fleet close to your borders? Just throw a clean fusion bomb and sink the entire fleet.

A terrorist group is hiding in the ruins of a city? Just throw a few fusion bombs in a row to completely flatten that area.

Such a weapon might actully be cheaper than cruise missiles since they won't need to be very precise and the raw material (hydrogen isotopes) are cheaper to produce than what s needed for a fission bomb.

How do you think such a weapon would affect modern warfare?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pure_fusion_weapon

Pure fusion weapon

A pure fusion weapon is a hypothetical hydrogen bomb design that does not need a fission"primary" explosive to ignite the fusion of deuterium and tritium, two heavy isotopes of hydrogen (see thermonuclear weapon for more information about fission-fusion weapons). Such a weapon would require no fissile material and would therefore be much easier to build in secret than existing weapons. The necessity of separating high-quality fissile material requires a substantial industrial investment, and blocking the sale and transfer of the needed machinery has been the primary mechanism to control nuclear proliferation to date.[citation needed]

ExplanationEdit
All current thermonuclear weapons use a fission bomb as a first stage to create the high temperatures and pressures necessary to start a fusion reaction between deuterium and tritium in a second stage. For many years, nuclear weapon designers have researched whether it is possible to create high enough temperatures and pressures inside a confined space to ignite a fusion reaction, without using fission. Pure fusion weapons offer the possibility of generating very small nuclear yields and the advantage of reduced collateral damage stemming from fallout because these weapons would not create the highly radioactive byproducts associated with fission-type weapons. These weapons would be lethal not only because of their explosive force, which could be large compared to bombs based on chemical explosives, but also because of the neutrons they generate.

While various neutron source devices have been developed, some of them based on fusion reactions, none of them are able to produce an energy yield, either in controlled form for energy production or uncontrolled for a weapon.

ProgressEdit

Despite the many millions of dollars spent by the U.S. between 1952 and 1992 to produce a pure fusion weapon, no measurable success was ever achieved. In 1998, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released a restricted data declassification decision stating that even if the DOE made a substantial investment in the past to develop a pure fusion weapon, "the U.S. is not known to have and is not developing a pure fusion weapon and no credible design for a pure fusion weapon resulted from the DOE investment". The power densities needed to ignite a fusion reaction still seem attainable only with the aid of a fission explosion, or with large apparatus such as powerful lasers like those at the National Ignition Facility, the Sandia Z-pinch machine, or various magnetic tokamaks. Regardless of any claimed advantages of pure fusion weapons, building those weapons does not appear to be feasible using currently available technologies and many have expressed concern that pure fusion weapons research and development would subvert the intent of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

It has been claimed that it is possible to conceive of a crude, deliverable, pure fusion weapon, using only present-day, unclassified technology. The weapon design[1] weighs approximately 3 tonnes, and might have a total yield of approximately 3 tonnes of TNT. The proposed design uses a large explosively pumped flux compression generator to produce the high power density required to ignite the fusion fuel. From the point of view of explosive damage, such a weapon would have no clear advantages over a conventional explosive, but the massive neutron flux could deliver a lethal dose of radiation to humans within a 500-meter radius (most of those fatalities would occur over a period of months, rather than immediately).

Alternative fusion triggerEdit

Some researchers have examined the use of antimatter[2] as an alternative fusion trigger, mainly in the context of antimatter-catalyzed nuclear pulse propulsion but also nuclear weapons.[3][4][5] Such a system, in a weapons context, would have many of the desired properties of a pure fusion weapon. However, the technical barriers to producing and containing the required quantities of antimatter appear formidable, well beyond present capabilities.

Induced gamma emission is another approach that is currently being researched. Very high energy-density chemicals such as ballotechnics and others have also been suggested as a means of triggering a pure fusion weapon.

Nuclear isomers have also been investigated for use in pure fusion weaponry. Hafnium and tantalum isomers can be induced to emit very strong gamma radiation. Gamma emission from these isomers may have enough energy to start a thermonuclear reaction, without requiring any fissile material.

Nanotechnology can theoretically be used to develop miniaturised laser-triggered pure fusion weapons that will be easier to produce than conventional nuclear weapons.[6]

Hypothetical effects of a pure fusion weapon

Most likely Chinese success of pure nuke fusion is via their own success in 100 petawatt laser power. Which can laser fuse nuke fuel directly.

Nuclear fusion
Nuclear fusion will be the only energy source soon. On its development depends the future of our children. Will they live in world of wars for oil or in world of surplus of cheap energy?

Laser fusion
Laser fusion, also called inertial confinement fusion, is the most frequent fusion reaction on Earth. It is commonly used for experiments relevant to hydrogen bombs. Is relatively simple and cheap in comparison to tokamaks but didn’t allow continuous fusion and can be ignited discontinuously only.

Basic principle
In laser fusion there is hydrogen fuel consisted of deuterium and tritium enclosed in golden tube under high pressure and low temperatures (ones of Kelvin). To initiate fuse ultraviolet laser is pointed at the tube.

laser-fusion-1.gif

First stage of laser fusion
Tube starts to produce large amount of x-rays that quickly heats stored hydrogen, mainly outer layers.

laser-fusion-2.gif

Second stage of laser fusion
Those explode and press inner layers enough to ignite nuclear fusion.

laser-fusion-3.gif

Third stage of laser fusion
It is almost the same as fusion in hydrogen bomb where fission bomb ignites fusion of small amount of hydrogen.

Laser fusion laboratories
Thanks to similarity to hydrogen bomb explosion, is laser fusion in centre of focus of military science, especially when nuclear test are prohibited by international agreements. Only 15 % of experiments are reserved to energetic research, the rest is military. Scientists study conditions of explosions to make better numerical models of destroying power of hydrogen bombs. There are two big laboratories in the world. One in USA calls National Ignition Facility Project (NIF) and the other in France calls Laser Mégajoule (LMJ). We have no choice but to hope that new more efficient methods to initiate fusion via laser, will be used rather in energetics than in military.

The Sun
CHINA is building a mega-laser that’s so powerful it could literally tear space apart.

Physicists in Shanghai are constructing what they call a “Station of Extreme Light”, which could be operational as soon as 2023.

The end goal is to create a laser so powerful it can produce 100 petawatt laser pulses — that’s 100 million billion watts.

For context, that’s 10,000 times the power of all the world’s electrical grids combined.

These ludicrously powerful pulses could be targeted at incredibly precise spots measuring just three micrometres across — that’s 2000 times less than the thickness of a standard pencil.

This means the researchers could achieve a laser intensity 10 trillion times greater than the sunlight striking Earth.

According to Science journal, this laser would be so powerful it “could rip apart empty space”.
