APN - There was no obvious reason why five members of a Chinese family should be bludgeoned to death as they slept in their beds, Sydney police said Monday.
The brutality of the weekend massacre has shocked even hardened detectives, who ruled out robbery as a motive and said the newsagent and his wife had no obvious enemies in their leafy Sydney suburb.
'Certainly it's one of the most vicious murders I've seen in many years,' Detective Superintendent Geoff Beresford said. 'It's hard to imagine a worse attack considering almost an entire family has been killed.'
The sole survivor of the Lin family, which emigrated from China six years ago, is 15-year-old Brenda Lin. She was away on a school trip when her loved ones were killed over the weekend.
Their bodies were discovered early Sunday morning when a relative came to their home to see why they hadn't opened their suburban paper shop as usual.
There was no sign of forced entry and neighbours said they heard nothing unusual. The three adults and two children had been beaten to death with a blunt object. Police said the attack seemed targeted rather than random and that the attacker or attackers entered through the front door.
'Whilst we can't totally rule out robbery, robbery doesn't seem to be an issue in this case,' Beresford said, saying no one held a obvious grudge against the family.
'How can anyone do this type of thing?' a neighbour said. 'They were such nice people. They were good, generous people.'
I seriously hope it is not another RACE HATE thing.
