A family in northern China has asked for mercy after they covered up a killing carried out by their son for 16 years, according to a newspaper report.
The son stabbed his cousin in the head with a kitchen knife after he caught him beating his father, the Beijing Times said.
The family in Huaping in Henan province said the cousin had a history of domestic violence and they and other villagers covered up details of the killing.
The facts only came to light late last year when a thief in the area told the police about the stabbing to try to reduce his own sentence, the report said.
The fugitive, 42, had moved to Yunnan province in southwest China where he had married and raised a daughter.
He turned himself in to the police after hearing that his secret had been revealed.
More than 300 villagers have signted a petition asking for clemency.
