The South China Morning Post reported that consumers were spurred by a rising “nationalist sentiment” to support the Chinese tech giant which has been blacklisted by the US.
According to the newspaper, “nationalist rhetoric of ‘switch to Huawei’ has gained increasing traction as trade tensions escalate.”
Social media campaigns have been urging citizens to support Huawei at Apple’s expense in response to US-China trade disputes, it said.

Some long-time Apple users in China have started framing Huawei purchases as acts of patriotism.
“There is a calling from my heart that I need to show support for Chinese brands, especially in the trade war climate,” said Wang Zhixin, a manager at one of China’s largest solar module manufacturers. Earlier this month Wang retired his three-year-old iPhone 7 and got a Huawei P30.
He explained that Huawei was not entirely chosen out of sympathy. “The company has a reputation for better quality at a cheaper price… [The P30] is faster and can take better pictures.”
Another former Apple fan, Sam Li, who works at a state-owned telecom company in Beijing, said that “It’s kind of embarrassing to pull an iPhone out of your pocket nowadays when all the company executives use Huawei.”

China is Apple’s largest overseas market, accounting for 17 percent of its total sales in the most recent quarter. Last year, Apple ranked as China’s fifth most popular smartphone brand with a 9.1 percent market share in the country. The company makes roughly 20 percent of its revenues and profits in China, which is the world’s largest market for smartphones. Apple’s market share in China has already fallen to seven percent in the first quarter of 2019, mainly due to Chinese consumers’ growing support for domestic brands.
On Wednesday, Goldman Sachs said that Apple’s earnings could drop by almost 30 percent if its products were banned in mainland China.

China’s communications firm Huawei has been accused by Washington of spying for the Chinese government. US President Donald Trump has issued an order barring US firms from supplying Huawei with parts or technology.
Complying with the order, software giant Microsoft removed Huawei laptops from its stores. Google has cut off Huawei's Android license while Microsoft has stayed silent on whether it will prevent the Chinese company from obtaining Windows licenses.
Huawei has been granted a 90-day extension to provide software updates to Android-powered handsets and maintain “continued operation of existing networks and equipment.”

The trade war with China has already evolved into a technological one as Washington barred American companies from supplying Huawei with components or technology. The move will eventually deprive the Chinese corporation of access to Google’s apps and services as well as Intel and Qualcomm chips when the measure fully comes into force.

Huawei has long been ready for US ban & won’t bow to pressure, CEO says
“This is going to hurt the American economy for years to come in countless ways, it will leave an economic scar on the American economy and there is… a stunning example of stupid economics,” professor emeritus of economics at the University of Massachusetts, Richard Wolff, stressed in an interview to RT.
He explained that the way the Trump administration is “hurting” Huawei may apply to many others. Now, CEOs realize that interactions with US firms may become unsafe and put companies in a vulnerable position. Thus doing business with the US can result in damages for companies, who can “be destroyed by a political operation” as the Huawei case shows.
“Here is the terrible, terrible miscalculation of the United States, which is very similar to the miscalculation of this tariff war. You’re teaching the rest of the world not to trust doing business with the United States,” Wolff said.
“Every CEO of every company has this morning sent a memo to the vice president, saying ‘reduce our interactions with United States companies, it is not safe for us.’ We become vulnerable.”
Trump’s decision also hurts US companies as they are forbidden from operating “in the normal way – to find the best quality at the lowest price.” The analyst stressed that no other political leader in Europe or Latin America has done such a “public attack” on their own businesses.

“We have already been preparing for this,” the founder of Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies said, as cited by Nikkei in his first speech since Washington severely hampered access for the firm to the US market over alleged security risks. Ren Zhengfei’s daughter, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, was arrested by Canadian authorities at the end of last year, resulting in a diplomatic row between China, Canada, and the US amid the already flaring trade tensions.

He added that the tech firm will advance by developing its own chips to lessen the impact of the ban on its production and can stay afloat even if Qualcomm and other American producers refuse to sell chips to Huawei amid escalating tensions.
The statement comes shortly after Huawei’s chipset subsidiary, HiSilicon, said that it has a “backup plan” and is ready to switch to its independently-developed chips to mitigate the US’ measures.
While the ban makes it much more difficult to do business with American companies, Huawei does not expect that it will have a significant effect on its long-term performance.
“It is expected that Huawei’s growth may slow, but only slightly,” the CEO said. Ren added that the company’s annual revenue growth may undershoot 20 percent.

Last year, another Chinese firm, ZTE, suffered similar restrictions from the Trump administration when American firms were banned from selling parts and software to it, eventually leading to a crash in the company’s stock price. The measure was lifted after ZTE agreed to pay a $1.4 billion fine and change its board and executive team.
However, Huawei said it’s not going to follow their fellow telecom’s example and dance to Washington’s tune.
“We will not change our management at the request of the U.S. or accept monitoring, as ZTE has done,” Ren said. “Even if the US asks us to manufacture over there, we will not go.”

The price of the company’s flagship product is under significant pressure due to lagging demand for pricy smartphones in China.
RT’s Boom Bust notes that more affordable smartphone models from rival local firms, including Huawei, seem to be gaining a strong foothold.
The Trump administration’s trade fights have added to Apple’s misfortune, threatening to snap the company’s globalized supply chain, creating uncertainty and pushing up the price of inputs.

The head of the company’s consumer division Richard Yu told CNBC the operating system could be ready for use in China by the fourth quarter of this year, while its international version will be available in either the first or second quarter of 2020.
“Today we [Huawei – Ed.] are still committed to Microsoft Windows and Google Android. But if we cannot use that, Huawei will prepare the plan B to use our own OS,” he said.

The company’s own app store, known as the App Gallery, would be available on its own operating system, Yu added.
“We don’t want to do this but we will be forced because of the US government. I think this kind of thing will be bad news not only for us, but also for the US companies because we support the US business, so we will be forced to do this on our own,” the top executive said. “We don’t want to do this but we have no other solution, no other choice.”
Following accusations of spying for the Chinese government, US President Donald Trump issued an order barring US firms from supplying Huawei with parts or technology.

The company was granted a 90-day grace period to continue doing business with US firms, but the order will see Huawei lose access to Google’s apps and services thereafter, and forbid the Chinese tech giant from using Intel and Qualcomm chips in its devices.
The Chinese communications firm has denied all the accusations of spying. Its founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said on Sunday that Huawei has been “preparing for this” for a long time. The crackdown on the tech firm comes at a time of heightened trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.

While Huawei’s own OS may have been in development for five years, a swift release date is crucial for the tech firm, which recently overtook Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer. Following accusations of spying for the Chinese government, US President Donald Trump issued an order barring US firms from supplying Huawei with parts or technology.
Although Huawei was granted a 90-day grace period to continue doing business with US firms, the order will see the company lose access to Google’s apps and services thereafter, and forbid if from using Intel and Qualcomm chips in its devices.
