Chen Wei expressed embarrassment after bringing a few overseas friends to Chinatown food centre, because the dirty plates and trays seemed to be piled everywhere. The STOMPer's friends, who had an impression of Singapore being a garden city, got a rude shock.
Upon talking to the stallholders, Chen Wei realised that the cleaning company responsible has been giving the stallholders problems.
Says the STOMPer:
"On Saturday evening, I brought a few of my overseas friends down to Chinatown food centre for dinner.
"To their astonishment, they were shocked to see lots of plates and trays lying everywhere on the floor.
"The renowned name Singapore has earned as a clean garden city was erased from their minds straight away.
"Apart from all these plates and trays that were lying around, there were also lots of tables filled with plates and bowls uncleared.
"When we requested the stallholder to clear the table for us, they told us that they paid $8 per day to the cleaning company for clearing plates and tables.
"However, they always have problems with them claiming they are always short of manpower.
"My goodness, each stall paying $8 per day is a $1600 per day with 200 over stalls there, and 30 days is $48,000 per month!
"My overseas friends are so disgusted with 'what a green city' Singapore really is."
