Chongqing Uses Nudity to Attract Tourism
Jul 28, 2009
A controversial photography competition will be held in Chongqing’s Wansheng district. Heishangu and Shilin—two of the district’s more scenic areas—will be offered as the backdrop for natural scenery. However, the introduction of nudity into the competition has caused quite an uproar.
According to the Chongqing Evening News, a visitor who wishes to photograph nudes simply has to purchase a membership for 380 yuan (US$60), no other admission is necessary.
The competition offers models who will display any pose requested by photographers, and every model is paid more than 2000 yuan (US$366.6) for two days’ work.
But is this competition really about art? A local professor who prefers to remain anonymous said that a nude photography competition, held outside where everybody can see, is simply a ploy to use naked models to attract crowds for the purpose of commercial speculation.
Many are condemning the event online and labeling it pornographic. Some say that it will corrupt the image of Chongqing City, and others are concerned that it will bring harm to children.
