KUALA LUMPUR: Seven Chinese education groups will meet Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Tuesday to discuss the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English.
They are the Dong Zong (United Chinese School Committees Association), Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers Association), Hua Zong (Federation of Chinese Association of Malaysia), Seven Major Clans Association, United Chinese School Alumni Association of Malaysia, Nanyang University Alumni Association of Malaysia and Taiwan Graduates Alumni Association of Malaysia.
Dong Zong president Dr Yap Sin Tian told Bernama that the meeting was following the group’s joint request to see Muhyiddin to discuss education issues.
He said that during the meeting, they would submit a memorandum requesting that the teaching of Science and Mathematics in Chinese primary school be conducted in the mother tongue. The meeting will be Muhyiddin’s first with the Chinese education groups since assuming the deputy prime minister’s post early last month.
The Chinese educationist groups had previously requested for such meeting to the then Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein but it did not take place.
On Friday, Muhyiddin who is the Education Minister, met the Gagasan Veteran Malaysia also on the policy of teaching Science and Mathematics in English.
The movement is requesting that English and Malay be taught as a language rather than through the teaching of other subjects like Science and Mathematics. -- Bernama
