Hong Kong(CNN)China has imposed restrictions on the publication of academic research on the origins of the novel coronavirus, according to a central government directive and online noticespublished by two Chinese universities, that have since been removed from the web.

Under the new policy, all academic papers on Covid-19 will be subject to extra vetting before being submitted for publication. Studies on the origin of the virus will receive extra scrutiny and must be approved by central government officials, according to the now-deleted posts.

A medical expert in Hong Kong who collaborated with mainland researchers to publish a clinical analysis of Covid-19 cases in an international medical journal said his work did not undergo such vetting in February.

The increased scrutiny appears to be the latest effort by the Chinese government to control the narrative on the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed more than 100,000 lives and sickened 1.7 million people worldwide since it first broke out in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December.

Since late January, Chinese researchers have published a series of Covid-19 studies in influential international medical journals. Some findings about early coronavirus cases -- such as when human-to-human transition first appeared -- have raised questions over the official government account of the outbreak and sparked controversy on Chinese social media.

And now, Chinese authorities appear to be tightening their grip on the publication of Covid-19 research.

A Chinese researcher who spoke on condition of anonymity due to fear of retaliation said the move was a worrying development that would likely obstruct important scientific research.

"I think it is a coordinated effort from (the) Chinese government to control (the) narrative, and paint it as if the outbreak did not originate in China," the researcher told CNN. "And I don't think they will really tolerate any objective study to investigate the origination of this disease."

CNN has reached out to China's Foreign Ministry for comment.

Even a child knows that the covid-19 originated from wuhan city because the wuhanese have a weird habit of eating bats and drinking bat soup.

Good job. Do not let these western funded traitors destabilise 祖国. Why would it be considered objective when it starts with ill intent. Anything pointing the origin to America is “ridiculous” whereas if it points to China it is “objective”.

Your hatred towards China is puzzling. Are you aware the cultural revolution is long over, more than 50 years ago? Are you aware the 四人帮 has all become ashes? Even Deng Xiao Ping the great who transformed communist China into, what in reality a capitalist society today has died for ages! Why are you stuck in the 60s? Did you know that China is leading the 5G revolution? Did you know that their capability is a big leap ahead of your hero, the USA? It’s over. The American Dream is over. The reign of the superpower is over and it is clearly demonstrated in this Covid Crisis.

WHO really had no credibility with such a BS statement..

WHO announces where coronavirus originated from
US President Donald Trump said last week that his government was trying to determine whether the virus emanated from a lab in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus pandemic emerged in December.

"All available evidence suggests the virus has an animal origin and is not manipulated or constructed in a lab or somewhere else," WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib told a Geneva news briefing.

"It is probable, likely, that the virus is of animal origin."

It was not clear, Ms Chaib added, how the virus had jumped the species barrier to humans but there had "certainly" been an intermediate animal host.

"It most likely has its ecological reservoir in bats but how the virus came from bats to humans is still to be seen and discovered."

She did not respond to a request to elaborate on whether it was possible the virus may have inadvertently escaped from a lab.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology has dismissed rumours both that it synthesised the virus or allowed it to escape.

Ms Chaib, asked about the impact of Trump's decision last week to suspend funding to the UN agency over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, said: "We are still assessing the situation about the announcement by President Trump ...and we will assess the situation and we will work with our partners to fill any gaps."

"It is very important to continue what we are doing not only for COVID but for many, many, many, many other health programmes," she added, referring to action against polio, HIV and malaria among other diseases.

She said that the WHO was 81 per cent funded for the next two years as of the end of March, referring to its $US4.8 billion biennial budget.

The United States is the Geneva-based agency's biggest donor.

Other big contributors are the Gates Foundation and Britain.

The Chicoms has been blaming the yanks. If tat is the case. Why dont have a full investigation? Tat way if wat the chicoms can prove the the yanks did it. The chicoms dont support the investigation means they are guilty as hell

It doesn't matter how the Chicoms impose restrictions... soon the world will find out.

Don't forget the hordes of Tiongs buying up all the masks before the global outbreak began. It's as if they had foreknowledge.

"who" already lost its credibility long time ago. last week, its credibility together with the prc's took a terrible tumble when they leak a fake release of the effectiveness or lack of it of a gilead drug in early trials in wuhan. if it's not effective in treating wuhan patients, it would not have been patented by the pla and wuhan lab in a joint application, and the patent would have not been granted quickly by the prc authorities for "national security" reasons. they obviously faked the report based on a small number of bogus test cases, and moreover, it still has not been peer-reviewed by other international entities. if it's not peer-reviewed extensively and based on a small sample of tests, why does "who" release it? it's because both "who" and the prc wish to discredit the drug and the company in order for prc to stealthily mass manufacture the drug based on a self-issued patent to the pla and wuhan lab, use it internally to mass-treat patients in order to bring acute cases down (that's why prc is almost in the clear now from virus-borne complications), and finally to sexport it for a high price to other nations. adding insult to injury, the prc authorities did not grant approval to gilead's patent application for the same drug in 2016 that was prescribed for other virus-borne diseases, such as ebola. but how cum suddenly they grant it to a stolen patent by pla and wuhan lab? gilead was not even mentioned in the pla-wuhan lab application. this who-prc conspiracy unravelled this week as dr. fauci and teams of scientists and medical sexperts in the u.s. touted the efficacy of the gilead drug in large test samples with a better than 30% faster recovery rate compared to placebos. the rate is deemed "significant", a game changer, and the drug is being recommended for "standard care" across all hospitals in the u.s. - meaning all er's and icu's treating patients with severe virus symptoms to administer the drug by default. very soon, all other cuntries will be following the standard care guidelines of the u.s. (prc is already using the same drug to successfully treat her patients, but it is labeled by the pla and wuhan lab for prc use only). very soon, we will see prc version of the drug out in the world market with a generic angmoh name resembling gilead's brand but without gilead's permission. if prc (and who) don't cheat, steal, lie, and defraud, i worry.

There is only ONE REASON why China would restrict the research.

Because it came from China.

This is admission of guilt.

If there is nothing to hide and the origin is NOT from China, why would they need to restrict the research? In fact they would encourage it to reveal the true origin of the virus!

I say this not as a China supporter or as someone anti-China. But this is exactly how it is.
