According to Gong Li's close associate, the star and her husband Ooi Hoe Seng drifted apart as they were often separated and hardly saw each other.

To salvage the relationship, Gong Li had tried hard to conceive a child for Ooi.

"Gong Li turned down quite a few movie offers to stay in Singapore to try and get pregnant. After half a year, they were still not making any progress and so they visited several doctors in Singapore, Beijing and even in the States."

Gong Li's close associate also revealed that doctors were unable to pinpoint a cause so they turned to Chinese remedies.

The Ooi family began making various Chinese medicine and tonics and Gong Li's mother also sent herbs to Singapore; Ooi even made tonics personally for his wife, but it was all in vain.

Gong Li gave up trying and took up the offer to film Shanghai in Hollywood despite Ooi's objections.

In the midst of Shanghai's filming, Gong Li's mother in China fell and suffered injuries that left her bedridden.

Just when Gong Li was caught in limbo between work and family, Ooi readily dropped his work and flew to China to take care of Gong Li's mother.

It was said that this was the reason why Gong Li made the choice to migrate to Singapore...for her loving husband.
