<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><DIV class=story_text><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to the report, 'The perils of growing up in a one-room flat' (June 20). It brought back a lot of memories, mostly good ones.
My father lived the last few years of his life in a one-room flat in Clementi. He was so happy when he received the keys to the rental flat, he called me to tell me about it. He duplicated the keys for all his children.
My dad was a handyman. He proudly renovated the place himself, painting the walls, putting in the floor mat, repairing the tiles and building shelves. We visited him often as he loved company and was proud of his nest. I remember washing his clothes and cooking dinner at his place often and constantly nagging him to eat healthily.
My aunt, who lived in a bungalow in Holland Road and had two maids at home, loved to 'hang out' at my dad's place. Every Sunday, after she had attended church service, she would pop over to my dad's place to boil soup and cook dinner. It was in this one-room flat that brother and sister bonded during the last years of their lives, catching up on old times. Many times, they would play mahjong when my sister visited.
My father died when he was 76 years old and I remember us going back to the flat to clean up the place. My aunt said she would miss the place very much.
The one-room flat was an important part in my father's life and we shall always remember the place with fond memories.
