A newborn girl was discovered abandoned in a Tesco carrier bag at a block of flats.
She was less than 24 hours old when a group of children found her on their way to school.
The infant was crying and extremely cold, despite being wrapped in a blanket and placed inside a re-useable supermarket bag.
But she made a good recovery after being taken to hospital and last night had started to drink milk.
The baby, who has been named Grace by nurses, was left outside a third floor flat in Brixton, South London.
Police are desperate to trace her mother, who they fear could be suffering both physically and mentally.
Inspector Simon Rooke, of Lambeth Police, said: 'I would like to stress to anyone, in particular the mother, that they should not hesitate to call us.
'We are concerned for the welfare of the mother and want to ensure that she is receiving the appropriate medical attention. The sooner we can locate her the sooner she can get medical help.'
He praised the children who discovered Grace and said they were 'pleased to have helped'.
He added: 'The baby was very, very cold but, due to the speedy discovery by these children, she was brought to hospital very quickly and treated.'
Grace, who is black or Asian, is believed to have been left outside the flat between 4.30am and 8.30am yesterday.
Police are carrying out house-to-house inquiries and examining CCTV footage.
They have also contacted GPs and social services in an attempt to find the mother.
