No one forced Chiam out: SDP chief

MRS Chiam See Tong's comments in Monday's report ('Chiam's SDP exit: Wife speaks up') is regrettable. It is a fact, recorded even in court documents, that Mr Chiam See Tong resigned as Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) secretary-general in 1993 when no central executive committee (CEC) members supported a motion he proposed. No one forced him out.

It is also a fact that the SDP did not announce his resignation for about a month, during which several CEC members, including me, had visited Mr Chiam repeatedly to persuade him to change his mind but to no avail.

Former SDP MP Cheo Chai Chen confirmed this when he told Shin Min Daily News that he and other members tried to persuade Mr Chiam several times but Mr Chiam 'didn't want to listen to what we had to say'. Even the present chairman of his Singapore People's Party, Mr Sin Kek Tong, said he had reminded Mr Chiam to be watchful of his language and behaviour, but Mr Chiam 'didn't think he should listen to my suggestions'.

Mr Chiam insisted he would return as secretary-general only if we gave him sole power to appoint and dismiss CEC and cadre members. This was clearly undemocratic and, more important, against the party's Constitution. It would have landed the SDP in legal trouble.

After it was decided that the CEC could not accede to his demands and his resignation became public, Mr Chiam spoke at a Singapore Press Club gathering where he attacked his own party. He did so although he, when he was still secretary-general, had made party leaders sign an oath not to criticise the SDP after they left office.

It was only after Mr Chiam's serious attack in his press club speech that the CEC acted and voted overwhelmingly to expel him.

All these are facts recorded in court documents that happened nearly 20 years ago. Since then, the People's Action Party has capitalised on this matter to hit out at the SDP and, in particular, me. My only wish is to record that it was not I who forced Mr Chiam out.

After Mr Chiam's departure, I had a responsibility as assistant secretary-general to do one of two things: pick up the pieces and lead the SDP in a new direction or to let it flounder and die. I chose the former.

We bear Mr Chiam no ill will and wish him well. The SDP has moved on.

Quite obvious that Chiam has not moved on. Still feeling sore after all these years! :D

The fact is that for 20 years Chaim has not spoken out until now. This fact alone shows him to be the guilty party. He has nothing more to add other than using his wife to perpetuate a lie.

If the SDP had continued under his leadership, it would be literally non-existent and an unknown just like his present SPP. SDP as an opposition party will be stunted! Time for him to go.

I think Lina has since regret. Well. it's too late. I don't think she will win in PP.

20 yrs after chiam left, what have SDP accomplished? lst , it lost all the 2 out of the 3 seats won when chiam was at the hemp.

next look at their votes statistic. isn't it obvious that many disapprove chee's presence? how many sdp imbeciles have chees burdened and dragged into trouble? does chee really bother about their welfare?

CHEE ONLY CARES FOR HIMSELF. as long as he can use, exploit, manipulate, trick, con, seduce.....imbeciles to follow him doing his bidding, he shall not think twice to do it.

Dear Siren

Both parties should come to a common understanding as to what really transpired so that both do not lose "face" in any way. Lets review the facts, No one in his right mind believes that Mrs Chiam spoke out on her own without first clearing it with her husband thus this has become a proxy war between the two Secondly she spoke out again only because of what Dr Chee said on his interview which he / she felt was a slap on the face of her husband.

Secondly stop blaming the ST for asking questions about what happened twenty years ago on ur 40th Anni. A Serious split in a party with participants still around is a question that had to be asked. The only question is the response and how gentlemanly or not it is,

Selective reading of history worthy of the PAP is not something Dr Chee should be doing. He is building a case out of 3 4 5 whereas refusing to acknowledge 1 and 2.

What was 1 ,2. It was CST decision to censure or discipline Dr Chee his protege for his " hunger strike" which the CEC refused, hence his resignation hence 3 4 5. Btw CSJ could have accepted censure but did not............

Did CSJ push the CEC. Did the CEC push CSJ, It was not about democracy or lack thereof, it was about a power grab within the party, factions etc and it was a lesson to be learnt by all opposition parties in SG.

Suffice it to say whether Dr Chee started a coup, willingly unwillingly etc if he had won himself a seat or the SDP had retained seats, this would not have been an issue. Success political wins would have justified anything, failure however leads to recriminations on both sides

it was deja vu in RP not long ago where NG TECK SIONG was ousted as sudden as when my pet snake joined and resigned from RP. along with him, 5 other RP MEMBERS quit. all of them including the 2 NGS relatives had since join SDP.

WHY IS IT ALWAYS HAVE TO INVOLVE SDP? HAS ANYONE STOPPED TO PONDER? i

it's like an old macdonald farm song:

A SDP HERE
AND A SDP THERE
AND A SDP PEE A PEE A PEEE PEEE EVERYWHERE......

Doggie, why you speak ill of Chee when your master LKY fits the bill to the T? ...exploit, manipulate, trick, con, seduce.....imbeciles to follow him doing his bidding!???

Doggie who could only bark when your master give the order? LOL...!

auntie lina already hinted it very clearly:

1. if chee had wanted chiam to stay, he would ve voted AGAINST sacking chiam.
2. if chee was sincere, he would ve rejected the rein of sec-general
3. if chee wasn't for the power grab, he wouldn't have informed parleemen about chiam's removal. he was thinking perhaps that since now chiam was sacked and chee now put himself as the new SDP boss, naturally the POTONG PASIR MP title should rightfully belonged to chee too.

well, FAT HOPE!! chiam won the mp seat NOT chee. chee was all along envious about chiam's political accomplished and had already on the first day of admittance into SDP could have plotted to dethrone chiam and put himself as the supreme SDP ruler.

chiam has since admitted that ever since that chee's betrayal incident, he "doesn't tust anyone that easily".

and when chee usurped SDP, what happened next?

IT'S ALL ALONG BEEN DOWHILL FOR SDP AND WORST, IT BRINGS MANY TO MISFORTUNES THOSE WHO ARE LINKED WITH CHEE OR SDP. EVEN FOREIGN MASS MEDIA WERE NOT SPARE!

that's what a dirty jinx chee can be!!

Can someone who knows both parties please tell them that ordinary singaporeans are not interested in their personal or political dispute.
We want opposition partiy members who can speak up and work for the ordinary singaporean especially the poor and the needy and to replace the pap politicians who don't work for the benefit of ordinary singaporeans.

there was once upon a merry time
appears a guy who did all kinds of crime
a master manipulator of feelings sublime
he likes to use his mouth to con a few dimes

but now of course he can cheat no more
coz of the many times he kanna caught before
his honey tongue is fast becoming quite a bore
everywhere he goes, he's shown out of the door

at first he will be friendly to see what you've got
whether you have cars very fast or women very hot
once he is sure that you definitely has a lot
he will put himself into your life by designing a plot

then he will trick you into a friendship to start
by showing you he is a man with a very big heart
and he will display his potential in the literacy art
which is fact is nothing more than meaningless fart

day in day out, u will hear same old shit
inane profanities that is devoid of wit
religious topics he will try hard to fit
you can just tell he is nothing more than a twit

he goes to temples and churches, what a joke
the crappy life he's leading, just take a look
nothing of substance only plenty of smoke
he is nothing more than a lazy useless bloke

a decent character and life is what he lacks
spoke too much lies trying to turn white to black
this fat lazy ass should be hanged on the rack
for everyone in this forum to give a good tight whack

lol !!!!!!!!
