Foreign students who deliberately default on their scholarship bond obligations may be banned from working or residing in Singapore, Parliamentary Secretary for Education Low Yen Ling said yesterday.

Ms Low also told Parliament that about 1 per cent of them have defaulted, and the Ministry of Education (MOE) is contacting another 4 per cent to check whether they can fulfil their bond obligations.

The remaining 95 per cent are serving their bond or have applied for deferment to pursue further studies, while a handful are unable to fulfil their obligations owing to reasons like illness, she added. A few have started to pay back the monies and we will continue to chase the rest of the defaulters for the scholarship monies," she said.

While locals have to save and scrimp to go to universities, foreigners just go the easy way with free scholarship from pappies and then break bonds. Super dumb pappies indeed.

scholarship is meant to provide financial assistance to students with very good result to further their study ,
scholarship is to help those less well off / poor students.

in sillypoore , those only top scorers will be considered for a scholarship.
one can get a scholarship even though the family is very wealthy.

what about those in the 3rd 4th 5th position in the ranking of the result ,
aren't they very good as well ?
shouldn't they be given scholarship if they needed one ?

Banning them from working in Singapore if they don't want to come back to serve or pay back the money??? This is the stupidest sanction that the scholars ever come out with!!

- of course, if they abscond after the degree they definitely have no intention to work in Singapore!!! Simple logic, and this works exactly to the favour of these trashes. They long ago already have it planned - free university education plus generous allowances from pappies, then using scholarship credentials, skip over to USA to get another degree or two from MIT, Cornell, etc. If they then join a amerigo MNC and come to Singapore offering their new fangled theories, you think the mom will not rush to grant them a permit? Of course rightist mom will, because, they are so stupid that they would not know what the leftist moe, nus, ntu did offer the scholarship years ago. :(
