This marks an almost complete recovery from the impact of Covid-19, with air traffic up to 99.1 per cent of what it was prior to the pandemic, Changi Airport Group said in a Jan. 22 press release.

A total of 6.4 million passengers travelled in December 2024, the first time monthly traffic exceeded six million since December 2019.

The busiest day of the year was Dec. 21, 2024, in which 226,000 passengers passed through Changi Airport that day alone.

Growth regions

North Asia was the fastest-growing source of passenger traffic, with China topping the list of countries.

Passenger traffic from China surpassed Covid-19 levels, and Shanghai entered Changi's top 10 cities list for the first time since 2011, recording a 94 per cent increase in traffic compared to the previous year.

Other top passenger markets included Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and Thailand.

China also topped the list of the top five cargo markets passing through Changi Airport.

It was followed by Australia, the United States, Hong Kong, and India.

Meanwhile, the busiest routes of the year were Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali), and Hong Kong.

Flying further

In 2024, Changi Airport added eight new passenger airlines to its network, including Air Japan, Air Canada, and budget Japanese airline Peach Aviation.

It also added 11 new city links, such as to Brussels, Malacca, Vancouver, and Broome.

More destinations are in the process of being established this year, such as Labuan Bajo in Indonesia from March, and Vienna from June.

"We witnessed a year of strong growth in passenger and cargo traffic as well as connectivity in 2024," said Yam Kum Weng, chief executive officer of Changi Airport Group.

"Looking ahead, we are optimistic of another year of growth in passenger traffic. Operating a major air hub in Asia-Pacific, Changi Airport Group will continue to invest in our airport’s infrastructure, systems and processes to augment our handling capacity, so as to be well-placed to support the rising demand for air travel in the coming years."
