Chance to meet George Benson

KUALA LUMPUR: Fans of the multi-Grammy Award winner George Benson (pic) will have a chance to meet him in person by just penning a few words why they would like to get up-close with the jazz legend. The American musician, who first played in Malaysia during the Monsoon Cup event in Kuala Terengganu in 2006, returned here a year later with crooner Al Jarreau to entertain at Malaysia’s 50th National Day celebrations.

The hit maker of songs such as This Masquerade, Give Me The Night and In Your Eyes returns here later this month for two events, one of which is the Royal Charity Gala Dinner at the Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur on Oct 29 to mark the 80th birthday of the Sultan of Pahang. He will also perform at Resort World’s Arena of Stars in Genting Highlands on Oct 30. Benson is due to arrive here on Oct 28, when Resorts World will be organising a meet-the-fans session at an exclusive reception.

To get invitations to the event, fans can write - in just 15 words - why they would like to meet the singer-musician, whose trademark rest-stroke picking technique on the guitar is itself legendary. Entries should be submitted to [email protected] before Oct 24 and e-mails should be labelled George Benson MTF - The Star, with the sender’s full name, IC number, mobile phone number and e-mail address. Lucky fans will be contacted by phone on the details on location and terms.

The eight-time Grammy winner, born in 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, first played the ukulele at the age of seven and by the age of 10, had recorded his first single record, She Makes Me Mad. His gala dinner show for Sultan Ahmad Shah is organised by the Institut Tengku Ampuan Afzan (Intaz), which also aims to raise RM1.2mil for the poor and needy. Tables are available with donations of RM50,000, RM30,000, RM20,000 or RM10,000 per table.

For more information, call 03-2070 4923, 09-567 6997 or e-mail [email protected].

For his Arena of Stars concert, tickets are on sale at RM60, RM90, RM140, RM190 and RM250 per person.
