D.C. Mayor Vince Gray Arrested in Budget Battle Protest

Cheered on by hundreds, D.C. mayor Vince Gray and several City Council members sat in the middle of Constitution Ave. on Capitol Hill before getting arrested and carted off to a police station on Monday.
“It is mean-spirited to tell us we can’t spend our money on what we know to be legitimate, life-saving health care,” Gray told the crowd. He was referring to a rider in the budget deal that would prevent D.C. from spending its own funds on abortion for poor women, the overwhelming majority of whom are black and Latina.
D.C. only relatively recently regained the right to spend tax revenue on abortion. In 2009, President Barack Obama signed a bill that helped reinstate a bit of home rule for the city, which had been banned from using its own money on abortion since 1988. Yet, while agreeing on the deal, it’s been reported that Obama told Republican House Speaker John Boehner, “John, I will give you D.C. abortion. I’m not happy about that.”
The protesters in front of the Dirksen Senate Building seized on that phrase, and D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser directed a warning at Obama: “If you don’t choose us, we won’t choose you.”
Currently 17 states provide abortion funding to their residents. Still, while the D.C. ban was lifted in 2009, the city hasn’t actually paid for very many abortions. Tiffany Reed, president of the D.C. Abortion Fund, told Amanda Hess earlier this year, “nothing has changed yet for D.C. residents.” In 2010, the D.C. Abortion fund received more than 1,700 calls from women in the area seeking assistance to pay for their abortions, according to the organization’s annual report. According to a 2008 report from the Guttmacher Institute, about 4,500 women had abortions in D.C.
The mayor and the city council also protested a rider that would force the city to fund a controversial school voucher scholarship program. D.C.’s needle-exchange program, which gives drug addicts access to clean syringes, was surprisingly spared.
Prior to his arrest, Gray addressed the gathering, saying, “I am sick of being a pawn in a political game.” Congress, particularly when it’s controlled by the GOP, has a long history of interventionism in the city which has only managed its own affairs since 1973.
This Congress has gone beyond previous sessions, and it stripped non-voting Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton of her sole federal power — the ability to vote on committee amendments — as soon as it came into session. Meanwhile, the city’s voiceless residents continue to pay taxes to the federal government, and bare silent complaints on the backs of their cars, where the standard license plate reads “Taxation Without Representation.”

Washington DC mayor arrested in budget bill rally

The mayor of Washington DC has been detained by U.S. police while participating in a protest rally against a federal government budget bill that will enforce major spending cuts.

Vincent Gray, who was among a group of protesters blocking traffic, said the government has not offered a “response” to his recent letter regarding budget cuts that affect the Washington DC public, a Press TV correspondent reported on Tuesday.

“In the recent past, I sent a letter just a couple of days ago to (Republican) Speaker Boehner (of the House of Representatives) and the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, making the case once again and asking for their support to give the citizens of this city …

[but] I got no response,” he said.

“What Congress has done is just complete disrespect and contempt for us as colonial subjects,” said a member of the DC Statehood Green Party.

One of the protesters, who had left Ethiopia for lack of voting rights, said she did not expect the same thing in the United States, describing the matter as “upsetting.”

Despite U.S. promotion of democracy throughout the globe, the residents of the U.S. capital city do not have the right to have representative in the U.S. Congress. Many years of protest and the city's official efforts to gain the right of representation in Congress has produced no results, despite promises by a number of Democratic presidents, including Barack Obama, to push for the basic right.

U.S. lawmakers had earlier agreed on a record $38 billion in spending cuts to avert a government shutdown that would seriously affect its troubled economy.

The budget bill would prohibit the capital from spending its own local money for reproductive health care services -- affecting low-income women -- on procedures such as abortion, etc. It could also even eliminate initiatives that help prevent the spread of AIDS.

The White House earlier expressed concerns in case the congressional Republicans fail to raise the $14.29 trillion debt limit by May 16.

Republicans at the House of Representatives say that Obama has to agree to further budget cuts, other than the $38 billion, in exchange for his demand over raising the debt limit.

Does these mayors earn millions of $ in salary ? I highly doubt so as the world's top 30 positions are all 'chop' by PAP.

Anyone dreaming that our million-$-salaried ministers or $13,000/month mayors will risk their path to riches ? Dream on.

I want to introduce a NEW ANGLE to attack LEEgime's ministerial salaries, opposition can consider to adopt this in rally speech:

Dear Voters, it is stale topics already although PAp minister repeatedly increased their own salaries. This time we want to conditionally agree with them! Now that is new isn't it?

What is the catch?

To be FAIR, I think it is OK if our ministers gets world's highest salaries, provided that our tax payers and citizens ALL also gets the worlds highest pay scale. If they can give that to us, then we shall reward them accordingly, is that acceptable to you voters?:eek:

But wait! Where is our salary position in the world? We are counting from the bottom!

Because PAp ministers forced us to be COMPETITIVE while they themselves are ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Hey! They even strongly opposed the MINIMUM WAGE SYSTEM, while they alone enjoy their WORLD's MAXIMUM WAGE SYSTEM, which does not apply to us voters, how about that?

:mad::mad:

This is the angle to get voters even more angry against the PAp LEEgime.

You push towards BOTH the extremes to show the voters, MIN vs MAX wage! Plus what we gave vs what we got!

Remember this guy???

OngTengCheong-1993.jpg

In January 1986, Ong sanctioned a strike in the shipping industry, the first for about a decade in Singapore, without telling the cabinet. He said that he did not inform the cabinet or the government because they would probably stop him from going ahead with the strike. There was a major corporate and cabinet backlash against his decision; however, the strike lasted only two days, and a deal was struck.

This can not count because he did not take part personally.

PAp staged some of their own wayangs, like the CUNT (NUTC) staged a protest against world union body ousting CUNT's membership disqualifying them to be a real union representing Singaporean workers, and CUNT protested outside their own HQ (SGP Conference Hall) then.

PAp's CASE also protested during World's Consumers' Rights days against JUNK FOOD SOLD TO OUR CHILDREN! That is protesting for peasants?:eek::wink:
