Celebrate National Day with the Democrats
Thursday, 21 July 2011
Singapore Democrats

The Singapore Democrats are organising our National Day Dinner on 6 August 2011. Themed "Remember our Past, Cherish our Present, Create our Future", this dinner will be a meaningful event where we come together to celebrate our nation's 46th birthday.

Every year we mark 9 August as the date we became a republic. But few stop to think what a republic is. Modern republics came about because common people became tired of of being lorded over by the few who anointed themselves rulers.

They banded together and got rid of this rule-by-heritage arrangement and brought about democratic governments called 'republics'.

Of course, there are governments that abuse the meaning of the word. The forner Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the People's Republic of China are examples where their forms of government are anything but republican.

Sadly, the Republic of Singapore is another example. Our system does not, in practice, allow us to change the ruling party, we have no free press, and we cannot exercise our fundamental rights as citizens.

This National Day the Singapore Democrats will re-dedicate ourselves to the cause to "build a democratic society based on justice and equality."

And in keeping with the tradition of SDP dinners, the evening will be fun-filled with entertainment and other activities, including a fantastic programme for children.

So bring along your entirely family and join us to commemorate our National Day this year.
