THE Government has formed an inter-agency steering committee to mark Singapore's 50 years of self-government this year.
Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew, who is chairing the committee, said it will leverage on existing projects and national events to ensure the 50th anniversary does not go by unnoticed.

'This is not another campaign,' he said this evening.

The aim is to have Singaporeans 'ponder on the transformation that Singapore has gone through, reflect on why we have succeeded and draw lessons on how we can best position ourselves as one united people for the future', he added.

Rear-Admiral (NS) Lui was speaking at the annual dinner and dance of his ministry, which also celebrated its 50th anniversary this evening at the National Museum.

In his speech, he noted that the Cabinet with Mr Lee Kuan Yew as Prime Minister was sworn in exactly 50 years ago, on June 5, 1959.

This was a momentous occasion, coming after 140 years of colonial rule, he added.

He paid tribute to the hard work and sound policies of Singapore's early leaders that transformed the country into a first world nation.

He added: 'It is an occasion to remind and charge this present generation of the precious legacy entrusted to our hands and the need for each of us to add our touch to the shared vision of growing Singapore into a vibrant global city, a gracious community populated by creative people.'
