CEO Was Praised for Ethics, Then Authorities Found Her Dead Toddler in a Suitcase
Suchana Seth was known in tech circles as a brilliant data scientist and AI ethicist before authorities arrested her for murder on Tuesday
Suchana Seth, CEO of a Bengaluru, India-based AI start-up, was honored in 2021 as one of the world's "100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics that year," before she was arrested for murder on Tuesday while traveling with her four-year-old son's body in a suitcase.
The 39-year-old tech entrepreneur allegedly tried to take her own life by slashing her left wrist shorty after smothering her son to death, the Times of India reported, citing a police report.
She allegedly wanted to keep her estranged husband from meeting with their son, India media outlets reported. Seth, who is reportedly in custody, could not be reached for comment and a message left with her company outside of local business hours was not immediately returned.
Seth is accused of killing her son in a hotel room in North Goa, India before her son was supposed to meet with his father. Hotel workers found bloodstains, noticed she did not check out with the boy, and called police.
She tried fleeing the scene in a cab, according to the Times of India. Police found the boy's body bagged in the car in which she was traveling and arrested her.
"The blood stains that were found on a towel in the service apartment were due to the slashing of her wrist," police told the Times of India.
Seth's company, The Mindful AI Lab, bills her as an "AI Ethics expert and data scientist," according to its website.
Seth has a masters degree in physics from the University of Calcutta, and a post graduate diploma in Sanskrit from the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, according to her LinkedIn page and company bio.
She has served as fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and was a Ford-Mozilla fellow at the Data & Society Research Institute in New York.
