I too had wondered about the importance of the Lanfang Republic. I'm fairly knowledgeable about the history of the region and remembered no more than a very passing reference to the LR among the plethora of personal 'kingdoms' like Rajah Brookes' Sarawak. Then I read the following article and understood. Read it to the end, and you will understand why kiqiu Chan cited this obscure footnote of a footnote to history.

Who wrote this?? For all you know this Hakka joker misrepresented himself as representative of Chinese Emperor and Sultan gave face and awarded him some land. After all a few hundred years back Cheng Ho did come into the region with his huge treasure fleet. Self Serving article
