American expert Gordon Guthrie Chang had predicted that China would collapse in 2011. When it didn't happen in 2011, he extended his prediction of the collapse by one year to 2012.

Excerpts from The Korea Times.

"Gordon Chang, author of "The Coming Collapse of China," famously predicted in 2001 that the Communist Party would fall from power in a decade.

When 2011 came with the party still firmly in the saddle, he confessed his mistake and said: "I admit it: my prediction that the Communist Party would fall by 2011 was wrong. Still, I'm only off by a year."

"Instead of 2011," he wrote in Foreign Policy magazine on Dec. 29, 2011, "the mighty Communist Party of China will fall in 2012. Bet on it."

As a result, he made Foreign Policy's "10 worst predictions of the year" twice in a row."

I don't understand the basis of building high speed rail.

Why not build something easier and need not travel so fast. As long as it benefits the people. People can move , goods and services can be provided. I think it suffice.

Then we can talk about more babies , more houses and you need infrastructure.

The thing now is completely nonsensical. You build ahead of demand and hope that infrastructure like roads, bridges , building, power station, petrol station and other things might follow. As a result, the costs start to rise even before the infrastructure start to spread.

Why do Indonesia need a high speed rail ? They are doing fine now. All they need is a proper planning and not a costly crap.

The people supporting the HSR are those house punters , real estate agents and real estate Company.

They see that when HSR is being build, people will stay around the HSR area more and causes the prices of house to go higher. It's not a bad idea. This happen to Singapore too when mrt is being build causing the value of property prices to rise. It benefitted Singapore because Singapore is so small. One mega mega project in Tampines, the economic effect will be felt in Jurong.

As for Indonesia, the bad planning, the sparsely populated and big country causes the effect to be "not so great". The property price surround the HSR did rise , but the effect is greatly muted.

It's all fun and games until you realize many of Sinkieland's newer MRT stations, HDB flats and condos are built by the Tiongs... what if the financial doldrums forced them to sneakily cut corners in their overseas projects too? :sneaky:

Not too different from the PAP regime's obsession with building MRT stations everywhere, even in no-man's land. Akan datang: the Jurong Region Line. Because they needed to build one JRL MRT station at the edge of Pandan Reservoir, they demolished a nice exercise corner there to make space for that.

It raises the value of the land (gives SLA and real estate 'stakeholders' an erection), and creates business for developers and contractors. That's the name of the game.

Another sneaky tactic of theirs: they say not enough children to enrol, so some schools have to be merged or closed. For example, School A and School B merge, School A gets enbloc'ed and the school building gets upsized to accomodate more students. School B gets demolished... and you should already know what that piece of land gets used for.

Not enough enrolment , but enough land to build condo and houses.
