After crossing the border, PLA did meet with little resistance initially and was soon advancing south towards Hanoi. To defend its capital, Vietnam recalled its battle-hardened troops which at that time was mostly stationed in Cambodia to fight head on with the advancing Chinese troops. Heavy fighting ensued and after suffering heavy casualties, PLA was forced to retreat. This brief but bloody border war lasted only four weeks.
