During his first visit to Resorts World at Sentosa yesterday, Mr Gan received an update on the progress of the project from its head executives.
They told him the resort with a casino is on track to open in the first quarter of next year. Four out of six hotels, the casino, the public retail and dining area called Festive Walk, and the first Universal Studios theme park in the region will open then.
After the closed-door presentation, during which he asked about the hiring situation, he told reporters: 'I am cheered that the management here has made a commitment that they are going to reach out to Singaporeans first.'
He said the resort had been working with various government agencies, such as the Singapore Workforce Development Agency, National Trades Union Congress and the different community development councils, to hire as many Singaporeans as possible. The resort is also working with Contact Singapore to offer overseas Singaporeans work opportunities.
The resort will hire up to 8,000 workers by the end of this year, with the majority of the jobs going to Singaporeans, their spokesman said. For now, it has 500 workers, of whom 80 per cent are Singaporeans.
