SINGAPORE: Singapore will step up its new immigration integration efforts with the launch of the People's Association Integration Council on Saturday.

The council will be launched by Minister in the Prime Minister's Office S Iswaran at the Integration Carnival 2012, held at the Singapore Zoological Gardens.

The People's Association (PA) said there had been a three-fold increase in the number of integration activities, from 553 to 1,680, between 2010 and 2011.

The number of local residents and new immigrants taking part in the many activities organised had also more than doubled in the past two years, growing from 118,053 in 2010 to 278,151 in 2011.

Of the PA's 31,800 grassroots leaders, 20 per cent, or 6,000, or them are new citizens and permanent residents.

Many are involved as integration and naturalisation champions to help integrate new immigrants into the community.

Madam Lily Heng, a grassroots leader from Cashew Division who was born and raised outside Singapore, said one such integration programme focused on Myanmar food, culture and language.

"We have this Myanmar potluck, we go to the Jasmine house and when they cook the Myanmar food and we try and we learn about their food and we also learn about the languages," Mdm Heng said.

To further integration efforts, PA is setting up 87 integration committees.

"Looking at the ... the growth of the projects and efforts, and the number of new immigrants joining us as volunteers, it is timely for us to move to the next phase to better involve these new immigrants, expand to more volunteers and do it in a more structured and coordinated manner," People's Association group director Chia Tze Yee said.

Immigration can mitigate rate at which citizen population ages: report

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1197113/1/.html

SINGAPORE: Singapore needs to continue attracting immigrants to slow down the decline and ageing of its citizen population, according to a paper released by the National Population and Talent Division.

It says that if the country's Total Fertility Rate remains the same, Singapore will need an immigration inflow of between 20,000 and 25,000 new citizens each year to keep the citizen population size stable.

This is one of the five population scenarios set out by the paper.

The scenarios are not predictions or forecasts, but illustrations of the growth and change in population that will occur if certain assumptions about future demographics trends prevail over a projected period.

Singapore's TFR now stands at 1.2, well below the replacement rate of 2.1.

This year has been described as a "demographic turning point", when the first cohort of post-war Baby Boomers born between 1947 and 1965 start turning 65 years of age.

Without immigration, the paper says citizen deaths will exceed births in 13 years.

By 2025, the population will also start to age and shrink, with the median age being 45 - up from the current 39 years.

The citizen workforce will also start to shrink with fewer working-age citizens supporting each elderly citizen.

The paper projects that the trend will be mitigated somewhat with immigration.

It says immigration will help to slow down the decline in the pool of working-age citizens and slow down the rate of ageing among the population.

Taking in 20,000-25,000 new citizens each year will also bump up the citizen old-age support ratio slightly from 2.1 to 2.4 working citizens for every elderly citizen, in 2030.

The paper will form the basis of discussions among focus groups and the public for a White Paper to be released by the National Population and Talent Division by the end of the year.

The White Paper will set out issues important to Singaporeans and strategies for a sustainable population. It will cover things like land use and infrastructure planning.

The public consultation for this is expected to start in the middle of the year.

Integration and Naturalisation Champions

Integration and Naturalisation Champions (INCs) initiate and spearhead integration and naturalisation programmes in the local community. INCs actively reach out to new citizens/PRs by conducting house visits to welcome and invite them to join grassroots activities to expand their social network. INCs also organise various grassroots activities such as welcome tea parties and festive celebrations to engage new citizens/PRs.

Ali Yahya Raee : Mr Lee, my ex-colleague, an Indian national rejected citizenship offer twice. I told him that he risked of getting his PR status cancelled next time. He replied that, even if he were to take Sg citizenship, as an Indian, he can always get back his Indian citizenship because the Indian government regards those who are born in India as permanently Indian citizens even when they have surrendered Indian citizenship. He said its 'Once an Indian, always an Indian'. And he's an RC member at GCT constituency. . He dont hv any plan to take up Sg citizenship. He is here to take a ride on Sg current success.about an hour ago via

I wonder of the post will be taken down by the dogs managing his page

Why did they hold an integration & naturalization party at the zoo? Those FTs and New immigrants will be with their own kind so what's there to integrate and naturalize?

Chaps from the People Association will tell these new immigrants to be like the famous late Ah Meng..The late Ah Meng was originally from Indonesia so in a way there are number of similarities between Ah meng and those new immigrants to our country.. Ah Meng contributed alot to the tourism industry in Spore when she was alive.. PAP will also tell these new immigrants to follow the example of Ah meng and contribute to Spore's economy too..

There is no mention of the quality to be allowed in. They are only talking quantity. Let's watch what kind of trash and floatsam drifts in.

If new Indians come along with their whole village elders, then each young man brought in has to support 2-3 old people themselves, so what will be the point of allowing immigrants to come with their families? We should take in young unmarried people.

Absolutely disgraceful. Professionals driving taxis in their mid 30 and 40s, structurally displaced and they are doing this.

PA to launch Integration Council to integrate immigrants at Singapore Zoo

[h=2]PA to launch Integration Council to integrate immigrants at Singapore Zoo[/h]Posted by temasektimes on April 24, 2012

In other developed countries like Australia, Canada and New Zealand, immigrants are expected to integrate and assimilate into local society, but in Singapore, not only are Singaporeans constantly exhorted by the government to integrate with the newcomers, taxpayers’ monies are also being spend to make them feel accepted, welcomed and happy in Singapore as well.

With four out ten people living in Singapore being a foreigner, more efforts are needed to ‘integrate’ them with the People’s Association due to launch an ‘Integration Council’ at the Singapore Zoo this coming Saturday by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office S Iswaran

According to the People’s Association, there had been a three-fold increase in the number of integration activities, from 553 to 1,680 between 2010 and 2011.

The number of local residents and new immigrants taking part in the many activities organised had also more than doubled in the past two years, growing from 118,053 in 2010 to 278,151 in 2011. It is not revealed how much public funds have been spent on these ‘integration’ activities so far.

Of the PA’s 31,800 grassroots leaders, 20 per cent, or 6,000, or them are new citizens and permanent residents.

Speaking to queries from the media, People’s Association group director Chia Tze Yee said:

“Looking at the … the growth of the projects and efforts, and the number of new immigrants joining us as volunteers, it is timely for us to move to the next phase to better involve these new immigrants, expand to more volunteers and do it in a more structured and coordinated manner.”

The People’s Association is a ‘non-partisan’ statutory board chaired by the Prime Minister himself and its board is staffed entirely by PAP MPs.

In the U.K general election last year, more than 80 percent of the immigrants voted for the ex-ruling Labor Party which was responsible for granting them British citizenship in the first place.

Agree.. I'm sure these professional chaps can still be of an asset due to their experience.. But sadly they are not being given the chance..:(

One wonders how many of these new immigrants will vote for the Oppos in 2016..? I'm bit worried for 2016...

The PAP won't be this bold, unless they know what to expect. Imagine one in every 5 arseholes in grassroots is an FT.
