Car theft ring crippled with arrest of two

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have crippled a machete-wielding car theft syndicate with the arrest of two men and recovery of a Mercedes Benz worth RM800,000. The two men, aged 27 and 19, were arrested at about 7.30pm near Jalan Kuchai Lama on Tuesday. A police team from the car theft prevention unit spotted the two men in a Perodua Viva behaving suspiciously, Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said.

He added that the car had different number plates in front and back. The team stopped the car and detained the two men. “The suspects later led police to a condominium in Brickfields where they recovered the Mercedes,” he said. Police also recovered several car keys and machetes from the suspects.

Initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been active for the past few months and was believed to be responsible for at least three car theft cases in the Klang Valley. Wan Bari said the suspects would use the machetes to threaten the victims and force them to hand over their vehicles. The suspects have been remanded until Nov 16.
