A Montreal resident faces a criminal charge alleging he incited hatred and called for violence toward Jewish people beginning just days after Hamas carried out the Oct. 7 attack in Israel.
The charge filed against Houssem Hammami, 37, became public at the Montreal courthouse on Wednesday. He has been summoned to make his first court appearance later this month. He is alleged to have incited hatred, between Oct. 14 and Nov. 1, toward a group and “such incitement is likely to result in a breach of the peace.”
He is charged under a section of the Criminal Code punishable by summary conviction. The case was investigated by the RCMP’s C Division based in Westmount.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Charles Poirier said Hammami was arrested on Nov. 29 after someone posted hateful comments toward Jewish people on Facebook. The comments also called for violence against Jewish people as well, Poirier said. Following the arrest, Hammami was released after he agreed to appear in court at a later date.
According to Le Journal de Montréal, the charge involves how Hammami is alleged to have supported Hamas in the attack that started the war between Israel and Hamas. An estimated 1,200 people were killed and about 240 more taken hostage on Oct. 7.
Hammami was charged in 2022 in a different case in which he is accused of assault and using intimidation to convince another person to abstain from doing anything that he or she has a lawful right to do.
