A farmer in Florida had to do a double take when her cow gave birth to a calf with two heads.

Baker County farmer Carolyn Crews said she got quite the shock when the calf named Annabel was born in a field on the Crews family farm on Monday.

The young calf was born with two separate heads and has four eyes, two noses and two mouths.

“It was just like a surprise because no one has even seen anything like this around here," Ms Crews told First Coast News.

The chances of a cow giving birth to a two-headed calf are around one in 400 million. It is believed to be the result of when an embryo begins to split into twins, but stops.

Ms Crews told First Coast News that she has been feeding Annabel four times a day. However she noted she was unsure how long the calf will live for, as her breaths are labored and her head is too heavy for her body.

The calf is also unable to stand or walk, which means she cannot feed from her mother.

"I don't think it was meant to be for something like this to live,” she said.

She added that her family had reached out to a veterinarian but had been told there was nothing they could do.

Ms Crews noted that while Annabel’s life may be short, she would never be forgotten.

"I never dreamed of such a thing happening. It'll be something that we probably never seen in our lifetime."
