A taxi driver who caused the death of an engineer and injured his wife was jailed for four weeks on Tuesday.
Mak Weng Tuck, 51, who was also banned from driving for five years, pleaded guilty to causing the death of Zhang Lan, 29, a PhD student, at the junction of Ayer Rajah Avenue and North Buona Vista Road on June 20, 2009.
Zhang and his wife Zeng Min, 31, both Chinese nationals, were using the pedestrian crossing when the taxi hit them while making a right turn into North Buona Vista Road at about 7.35pm that day.
The court heard that when Mak made the right turn, he saw no oncoming traffic. The traffic light facing him was still showing 'green' but without any green arrow.
