A taxi driver was fined $4,000 and banned from driving for one year on Monday for negligently causing grievous hurt to a motorcyclist and pillion rider.

Wong Yek Piau, 71, admitted to causing grievous hurt to Mr Muhammad Imran Ahmad Shah and Ms Juraidah Rahim. The incident occurred at the junction of Jurong West Avenue 2 and Corporation Road on Feb 12 last year.

He had failed to keep a proper lookout and give way to the 22-year-old rider who had the right of way when making a right turn into Corporation Road. Investigations showed that when Wong made the right turn, the green directional signal had not come on yet.

Mr Imran suffered serious injuries including fractures to the legs and face. He was warded for more than a month and given medical leave of 62 days in total. Ms Juraidah, also 22, had a broken left arm and multiple abrasions on her body. Wong could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000.
