JOHOR BARU: Cabbage flowers which are selling for between RM150 and RM250 per stalk are proving to be a hit among couples this Valentine’s Day.

A florist in Taman Sentosa here, who wanted to be known as Lim, 29, said that although pricey, the flowers were popular. “Many couples are willing to spend money on lavish items,” she said.

Special flower: Cabbage flowers selling for between RM150 and RM250 per stalk. The flower is a growing hit among couples who want something different to show their love on Valentine’s Day.

She added that the flower was unusual as it has big petals that spread into a beautiful bloom. “As the flower itself is quite large, customers usually buy it per stalk and we wrap it in attractive packaging decorated with little hearts and glitter,” she said.

Lim added that the cabbage flower comes in violet and white. “Young couples, however, still prefer regular flowers such as tulips and roses for Valentine’s Day. “Each stalk costs about RM12 including packaging,” she said.

Lim added that a bouquet could range in price from RM130 to more than RM200, depending on the number of flowers and added items such as teddy bears or chocolates. Fun Cottage proprietor Chris Wong said that most of her customers preferred paper flowers instead of fresh ones.

Her kiosk in a shopping mall here offers an array of handmade paper roses in different sizes and colours in pretty bouquets. “Some feel that since they are spending a lot on the flowers, they might as well get something that lasts.

“The paper flower bouquets come in two sizes and cost RM80 for 12 stalks for the small ones and RM190 for big blooms,” she said.
